Wal-Mart: The Low Price, Low Wage Leader - Assistant Manager Walmart Employee Review

Pros

They offer employees a 10% discount on merchandise and allow employee health plan subscribers to purchase subscriptions for $5. There is also a modest profit sharing plan and a bonus based on 'shrink' numbers (that is how the real inventory of the store compares with what should be there).

Cons

The pay is low across all functional areas, although the sales floor and checkouts are the worst. Store managers receive a bonus based on store performance (profitability), but hourly 'associates' do not. Most assistant managers are ambivalent because of their own low pay and long hours, thus are not very good at motivating others.

Pros

Advancement opportunities, great at developing skills, great place to learn a skill and grow your resume, or grow with the company.

Cons

Understaffing issues negatively affects all parts of their business. However, Walmart has increased their minimum hourly rate with hopes to attract more committed employees, and retain better employees.
