Pros

AVOID. Legit name, smart people, good comp (soon to be lowered), but please read cons. If you're smart enough to land a job here, I'd look elsewhere.

Cons

#1: Verily is being separated from Google/Alphabet as Google's under a lot of financial strain. No more "google" benefits (shuttle, building access, etc.). **Comp is expected to decrease.** This is NOT Google. To quote someone else's review that really hits home for me: "This isn’t “google x” or “google life sciences ” anymore despite people putting that 8 year old statement on their LinkedIns. It’s a failing startup with inexperienced and incompetent leadership. If you want to work at Google, apply to Google." #2: Politics. Man... there's so much to do here (because we lack PMF) and because we're a startup, but it's like we've inherited the bureaucracy of a F500 so it's tough to get things done. Sure, this happens at other companies, but the hypocrisy is wild. I was sold an idea that this was a quick and nimble startup within Alphabet. Nope. #3: Quiet layoffs. This company barely has product-market and is suffering for it. Layoffs occurred with minimal comms from management, put a bad taste in my/many of my colleagues' mouths. To anyone considering a job here: look, if you're in a bad place, fine, a job is a job. But if you're smart enough to get this job, look elsewhere.

Thank you for leaving your review and we’re sorry to hear you’re having this experience. We would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you directly to hear more of your feedback. As it relates to changes related to Project Flywheel (our separation from Google platforms and systems), Verily is on track for this systems separation and we have shared routine and transparent communications about the details and the process - including multiple "deep dive" employee sessions walking through details of what's to come. We made a commitment to share information with employees as soon as decisions are made, which we’ve done across multiple channels over the past two+ years so there should be no surprises to employees about why we are separating (to benefit Verily and our business), what’s happening or what’s to come. We are also working closely with our recruiters to ensure their conversations with candidates reflect all of the information and decisions, as well as to outline what additional changes are planned. With respect to organizational changes, including hires or restructures, we prepare full and transparent communications plans to ensure teams are aware. For example, in the product organization’s most recent changes, we communicated within the product organization, across teams to functional partners, and then broadly to the entire company on Slack and in the recent town hall. And we will continue to operate in this way with transparency for any future changes. We appreciate your perspective and your feedback here, and in our routine employee surveys is very valued. We hope you'll reach out to PACT directly at Verily-PACT@google.com so we can help to improve your experience at Verily.

Pros

Work life balance is good, there are many smart people working here that do some incredible work.

Cons

Very flat org structure. Everyone is a senior engineer here. Leadership is very unclear in their direction and pay is at the bottom end of market. Poor management of the company financials has led to over a year of equity being completely missed and pre-existing equity being devalued by 90%. Office politicts are strong here and teams are very protective of their work. dont expect to move laterally or work on different projects here. the team you join is where you will stay.
