Pros

Free gym membership and free showers

Cons

No pay or incentive. Highly competitive gossip based workplace and at times an uncomfortable workplace. The pay structure with this business is disgusting and exploitive. You work 48 hours a month and get paid £495, with a direct debit that comes straight back out, therefore being classed as income and affects your annual tax allowance. This, in my eyes is a loop hole to get out of slave labour. There should be an amount you pay per month or session and you choose your hours, but instead your a glorified cleaner, who can’t choose when he or she works and expected to do 2 classes a shift and multiple talks throughout your 4 hour shift and expected to find clients in your time there. At times, found my business cards destroyed and found other trainers cards on my display , which is intrusive and disrespectful. Got the impression management would cherry pick who they want and leave you with scraps. Found inductions was mainly done by management, therefore sealing a potential lead and felt the exposure for FT’s was limited. No real flexibility on what shifts you can work and dictated by holiday allowances? Even though you’re not making an income? It’s ridiculous and personally can’t see this cooperation running like this for the next 5 years as it’s wrong. Towards the end of my tenure, I was going through a rough patch and received zero support during this, but only being chased each day as to when I’d be back. And because I was still in my probation, any shifts you’d be sick for, you would have to make up, so you’d end up doing 4 shifts a week and therefore creating an external pressure to come back , when you’re clearly not in a frame of mind or well. Biggest regret of my fitness career so far! If management was respectful and understanding of my resignation, I wouldn’t be leaving this review. And my resignation email recommending me to leave a review also.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. Firstly, we are sorry to hear that you have not had a positive experience whilst at The Gym Group. We are also sorry that you were unhappy with the employment model. We aim to be as transparent as possible with regards to the operational model and the Fitness Trainer role. To clarify, our Fitness Trainers are employed on a part time basis (this salary does constitute an income and therefore is subject to tax and NI deductions), to support with the operating of our gyms and maintain our high levels of customer service and cleanliness. In addition to pay, employed Fitness Trainers are entitled to a number of employee benefits, development opportunities and access to our member base. Outside of your contracted hours and under a separate PT rental agreement you, in exchange for rent have access to our facilities and members to build your self-employed business. Both agreements are independent of one another, and the payments are managed by different teams within the business. With regards to shifts within your Fitness Trainer role, whilst we cannot comment on the specifics of your experience, we do aim to provide flexibility around shifts and managers should work with their teams when scheduling the rota to accommodate where possible the needs of the team whilst balancing this with the business needs. However, we take onboard your feedback along with your other concerns. Lastly, wellbeing is a business priority at The Gym Group and commit to providing wellbeing provisions and support through our EAP service, training/line manager support and resources within our Wellbeing Hub, however we are sorry to hear that you did not feel supported during this period. If you have any further feedback on your experience that you would like to share then please get in touch at hrsupport@thegymgroup.com

Hi there, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your review. I am so pleased to hear that you feel supported by your management teams and that we are keeping you well informed with the information you need to get the best out of your experience at TGG. Thank you for your feedback regarding the communication of the bonus scheme, I will ensure this is fed back to the relevant people. With regards to development plans, we have a great Coaching for Performance framework for discussing and identifying your development goals and I encourage you to discuss this with your GM if these conversations haven't already taken place. We have also recently re-launched our fantastic AGM to GM development programme to support our teams in taking the next step in their career journey with us. All the best Rachel

Pros

Staff are great and helpful always to help grow business and grow us as people and PTs. The members are great fun and easy to get along with.

Cons

The gym are making the PTs charge to much rent and should provide them with a little incentive to be able to earn money to work for them.
