Pros

A place to get experience right out of college

Cons

I understand this is a long review but it is worth reading if you are interested in working here or doing business with the company. I left due to unresolved issues. I was an engineer at Simplex for over 5 years and was the longest standing mechanical engineer in the company. That in itself should tell you a lot about a company. I filed a complaint against upper management for verbal harassment, and the investigation was never completed nor did I ever receive an apology of any kind. I followed the procedure that was stated in the employee handbook, but it seems as if the handbook is only relevant when upper management wants it to be. I brought it to HRs attention in August of 2019 and again in November of 2019. The “investigation” was not completed even after my last day in January of 2020. The company was sold to DART Aerospace in October of 2019 and upper management moved around a bit. The new upper management still chose to not do anything about my complaint. Before I left, it was brought to my attention that I was not the only one who complained about harassment from upper management, There were no performance reviews or raises based on performance in my five years there. This was brought up multiple times from previous engineering groups and we were always being promised performance reviews. Also, I was never given an exit interview even though I gave detailed reasons of why I was quitting in a formal letter, so it is clear that the company doesn’t care about making the workplace better. Upper management here doesn’t believe in continued improvement and investing in their employees. They do not promote additional training for their engineering team. Employee retention does not exist and the new management of the facility has made it clear that they doesn’t care about retaining experienced engineers. And if you are looking for a place that shares its profits at the end of the year, look somewhere else. Don’t let them trick in you into believing that there are bonuses and incentives for doing good work or for working overtime. Even with my experience and education background as well as proving how many thousands of dollars my team saved the company throughout the year, we were given an embarrassing amount as a bonus. To make matters worse, they decided to shut down the company over Christmas without pay. We were not told this until the week prior. If you want a place you can grow in as a professional, look somewhere else. Until changes are made when it comes to who is running this facility, this will not be a place you can trust and it is not a company where you can grow in. This review is not from a bitter or bias person. As I mentioned in the beginning of the review, I was the longest standing engineer here and I was only there 5 years! I always went beyond what my job description entailed and did whatever I could to help the company succeed during my 5 years there. I want others to be warned that the people who are managing this place are clearly not fit for their role. They will wear you down and they will remind you how replaceable you are. Working here affected my mental health and my personal relationships. And in regards to pay, it is lower than average for the state of Oregon. In other words, it is not worth it to work here.

Pros

Benefits (Health, dental, 401k match) A variety work, and a lot of hats to wear.

Cons

If only being able to find two pros wasn't enough, I hope this section proves enlightening. The largest con at Simplex is the attitude and actions of the upper management team. Micro-management is the norm to an extreme degree. Managers reserve the right to discredit any presented design at any time based purely on emotion. A particular example that comes to mind is a simple discussion regarding textbook equations of fluid dynamics and an individual suggesting that he doesn't have to believe in reality; he just wants things to work he thinks they should. Attempting to defend the laws of physics becomes the norm at Simplex for every engineer. The upper management team of Simplex can often be found arguing and yelling at the various teams across the company. It is always an "US versus THEM" attitude at Simplex. This breeds such a toxic environment of stress and hatred for one's job that it begins to impose on life outside work. The second greatest downside is the sales driven nature of the business. I understand that money keeps the doors open. However, project bids are often finalized without any engineering input. The impossible is promised and is unable to be delivered. An expectation of unending overtime is also present. Notably in manufacturing and engineering, 50-60+ hour weeks with work on weekends are not uncommon for months on end. Project schedules have little consistent so everything is constantly an urgent priority. Pay is average per 2016 statistics, and that is presented to you as a positive. Always expect the unexpected.
