      An unfortunately poisonous culture - Software Developer Shopify Employee Review

      Pros

      Generous benefits, time off, travel ability.

      Cons

      There is definitely a culture of superiority, arrogance and we know something the rest of the world doesn't. What we do is not rocket science. But developers are overly valued as gods, and we forsake infrastructure, solid planning, resource management and responsible governance. It's easy to say we're successful because we have cash coming in the door, but what lies beneath the cash is actually a quite poorly managed and led company.

      Pros

      Remote first culture. If you want freedom of location and a company to truly mean and support it - this is the place.

      Cons

      Constant change. Nothing to hold on to in this role, compensation, KPI's, tools all change every quarter.

      Pros

      Legacy Shopify ICs and lower-level managers are excellent and generally quite nice (company's Canadian after all) Caliber of engineering talent is generally high Dev-friendly stack (Ruby/Rails) Bleeding-edge AI adoption with unlimited token budget

      Cons

      Recently brought over a CTO from Microsoft: he brought with him a lot of not-at-all-nice people who are highly political, frequently rude/condescending to legacy Shopifolk, and make consistently bad/dev-hostile technical decisions Bleeding-edge AI adoption is being used to justify unreasonably increased expectations
