Pros

- Good culture on diversity inclusion and living company values and demonstrated by CEO - Strong focus on Risk, Security and Compliance. About 30% of staff is hired to perform such roles. - Work/Life Balance : PayPal gives a 1 month sabbatical for every 5 years of service - Nice office environment and depending on location free lunch and ample stock of a variety of drinks and beverages - PayPal brand well recognized in core markets like USA, Europe and Cross border commerce markets in APAC. - Cash rick company that invests in fintech startups and acquisitions over the last decade. Acquisitions include: iZettle, Simility, Hyperwallet and Braintree.

Cons

- Business reorganization in process. Workforce reduction due to redundancies or change in org structure led to people leaving the company due to attrition or redundancy. - Marketing teams from various products were merged with the new CMO joining PayPal. - This followed with Worldwide Sales team reorg where PayPal sales team have been merged with Braintree sales team for Mid and Large enterprise business. This started in USA last year and have been expanded this year to the International markets. This has caused lots of uncertainty to employees - Product strategy is to have a single PayPal platform with other services like Braintree, iZettle, Hyperwallet, Simility as part of the platform. The various product team have been merged back to the PayPal product team group. Integration is still in progress and question is whether products like Braintree will still exist post integration. - Investment by the company is on the top clients in the USA, less focus on growing the international markets. The competition like Adyen and Stripe are heavily investing in other international markets via increase local acquiring and local/regional payment methods. This will make PayPal less competitive in meeting merchant needs internationally and drive merchants to other providers. - Underwriting and Pricing teams sits in the USA and have no local context of the business to work with Sales to price deals to win the merchant. - Management is telling employees that the strategy is clear and the right thing to do but have no definite details to share on the execution especially on the people front. People are concerned where they will be any impact in their roles with this transformation.

Pros

PayPal has a lot of potential. It has two very strong brands in PayPal and Venmo with significant awareness and user bases that other companies envy. There are pockets of teams that are really pushing the envelop to reimagine what PayPal and Venmo could be—especially the Venmo team—and to move with speed given the company must stay focused and not waste time with Apple Pay, Shop Pay, and so many other competitors nipping at PayPal's heels and aggressively taking market share.

Cons

While some teams are pushing to self-disrupt and are moving fast, too many teams—and I'd argue the majority of the company–are living off of PayPal's laurels from the late 2010s through the pandemic. The culture and mindset have to change for the company to remain competitive. Otherwise, they are the Titanic and they're sinking slowly. The former CEO who only last 2 years tried diversifying the company's revenue, planning for the future. But the board and its former chairman (now new CEO) felt he wasn't moving fast enough to stabilize and marketshare. Instead, the board hired the former chairman who made computers and printers at HP—another sinking ship—to lead the oldest fintech company. The loss of confidence in the leadership team and the strategy are only accelerating.
