Pros

Big company-so if you're employed, you'll hear A LOT of people talking about how great your store is and you'll feel the pride, kind of. I personally love their professional recruitment process and orientation. They have systematic employee website where the employees can download all the HR-related forms, pay-stub, see the schedules etc. They 'care' about their employees' safety at work and they have 20% employee discount. You'll get compensation when you open Nordstrom rewards card to the customers.

Cons

(Notice: I believe things I've been experiencing may be different with the other stores. It really depends on the store management people) My colleagues & I were hired as pre-opening team. We've been setting up our new store. Well, at first, I REALLY loved working for the Rack. I felt like Nordstrom was the best company to work for because it seemed like they really care about their employees. The store manager, dept managers, and assistant dept managers were so friendly at the first three days of work. They were so welcoming. However, as the time goes by, things have gotten worse. They emphasis the importance of friendliness to the costumers during briefing but they don't even smile or greet us when we're on the floor. Every time I walk pass by my store manager, she won't smile back or even bother to look at me. The dept managers and their assistants don't know how to delegate tasks, so when we finish a task, we always don't know what to do next. We have to BEG for tasks. One time, I ask my asst manager of the next task and she was like, "I don't know, well, let's see.." and shouted to my dept manager, "Hey XX, she needs a job!" ---I WAS SHOCKED. Favoritism is the biggest problem here. The store manager, dept manager and asst managers (I am specifically talking about mine) play favorites. These favorite employers always get assigned first/do 'special' tasks. They are treated like the 'experts' in the dept, they always joke around with them (but never, with us). Guess what? These favorites are, in fact, the laziest people in the dept. They act straight only when the management people are around, and when they aren't, these 'favorites' play with their phones, texting, and/or sexually harassing female employees--which is funny to me because Nordstrom takes sexual harassment seriously. I am talking about the truth here, I am pretty sure what I said here is recorded on the camera. Another cons I would love to elaborate but would be too long to type: weird number of hours and the management people's indecisiveness. Too much pressure on opening rewards cards.

Pros

Decent base pay, somewhat autonomous, great tip potential.

Cons

The company has changed for the worse since COVID. When I came back the mood of the entire store had shifted. Gone were the days of comradery, customer focus, and taking pride in a job well done. In its place there is a new culture of cutthroat sales, a severe decline in customer focus, and worst of all a new focus on profit over customer satisfaction. When I was told that the amount the store charged for a shoe shine was not enough to do the best job I could for a customer I knew things had gone downhill for the company. Not to mention I watch a manager prey on a mentally disabled person in order to secure a sale, when the person could not understand what was being offered. Sad that such a once great company is now just another greed ridden corporation.
