Pros

Medical Protective is a great place to work. I am baffled after reading previous reviews that describe problems with management and the culture. This company is comprised of many great individuals that lend to the team environment culture. Management is always accessible and encourages every employee to speak up when they have an idea or an issue. This position is reliant upon thinking outside the box, which makes every day different from the last. The company is comprised of several different regional teams that focus on specific markets, which allows every employee to utilize their strengths and offset their weaknesses. Senior management and even the CEO make themselves accessible for questions, concerns, etc. They keep employees in the loop with quarterly updates and informational sessions. It provides employees with an outlook of how the company is doing and what plans and goals lie in the future, both long and short term. The company also encourages career development with financial incentives. There is a great opportunity for career advancement and promotions for those who achieve their annual goals. Overall, Medical Protective is a leader in the malpractice insurance industry and provides an exceptional culture and incentives for its employees.

Cons

There are a small handful of people that rely on their team members to complete their work. These individuals discourage other people from wanting to help them because they don't pull their own weight. The interview process is extensive and long. It usually is a three round interview process spread out over 3-4 weeks. It does take awhile for management to reach a decision in the hiring process.

Pros

Good pay and benefits. Generous expense policy when traveling for work. Company-level onboarding process is solid.

Cons

Organization is really flat, which can be good, but also means there aren't lots of middle-management opportunities...at least the areas I was familiar with. No onboarding plan for my role. My boss frequently missed or moved our 1-on-1 meetings and never bothered to teach me anything, despite me being new to the MedMal industry and new to the company. I asked questions when I had them, but you don't know what you don't know. Most of our monthly 1-on-1 meetings were 15 minutes or less, when they happened. Manager was, in general, distant and cold. I mentioned that they missed my birthday and they said "I don't even know when your birthday is...HR doesn't tell me that. I'd have to look that up." Never seemed to try to understand my ideas when I explained them. Maybe it's a Midwest thing. My manager fired me without any warning/write-up/performance plan. Manager told HR that I had been warned about poor performance, coached on it, and hadn't improved. None of that was true and no documentation was presented (because it didn't exist). HR played along. They like to use Buffett's quotes about integrity, but I can't really say that they walk the talk.
