Pros
Working on the manuscripts is challenging, but in a good way. I found that doing substantive editing to make papers worthy of submission was a rewarding and interesting process. The contributing authors respected my notes and opinions and typically deferred to my expertise, which made me feel capable and valued. Although the attending surgeons may be difficult to pin down due to their busy schedules, they are agreeable people who let it be known that they appreciate your efforts.
Cons
Direct management of this position has a punitive style that does not cultivate motivation, morale, or team-building. You will be expected to commute into the office every day. You will be expected to work more than 40 hours and have your effort and dedication questioned unless you you stay late. You will be expected not to take any days off of work from July 4th until the end of the summer course (typically in late August). You will also be expected to work evenings and weekends during much of that time in the summer.
