Pros

Some nice people. Well stocked staff area (but needs updating). Central Euston location for transport links. Money's OK whilst you use the job as a stepping stone to something better.

Cons

Departmental cliques and lack of co-operation. Bureaucracy gone mad - " Here's a booklet about it". Crazy over-use of jargon to the point of incomprehension. Lack of any genuine career progression despite the much lauded Foundation programme which is the biggest con of all.

Wow, that is some interesting feedback for us to consider. However, before I do respond I need to look into some of the comments you have made to make sure I understand where the potential issues may lie and whether we are currently planning on addressing them already. However, I would still like to thank you for sending us your feedback because it is only by receiving such examples can we aim to improve on how we are as a company. ... Sorry about just publishing an initial reply above ... I wanted to check a few things before expanding on the initiatives we have across the business and hopefully addressing your concerns in more detail. I think we could describe 2019 as ELEXON’s year of change as we have established a new, progressive corporate strategy and are undertaking a significant review of our culture to ensure it supports both our customers and our staff. We have recently recruited a new Director of Strategy and Communications and she is leading this transformation. Our strategy aims to simplify processes, encourage more cross-functional team activity, enable innovation, reduce jargon by promoting “plain English”, and placing our customers and staff at the front of our culture and services. We recognise that we have skilled and talented people at ELEXON and we want to ensure that there are opportunities for them as the company evolves. We are also keen to retain staff so have introduced schemes such as staff mentoring and training and have undertaken a series of workshops to review our culture, increase collaboration and reduce silos where they could exist. I am pleased to say that our latest staff engagement survey is indicating that we are continuing to move in the right direction and the analysis from the independent survey company shows that we are now in the top tier of organisations who are delivering a positive working environment for their staff. In addition we recently achieved the silver standard within IiP, but that of course should not make us complacent and there is always room for improvement, particularly when reflecting on your feedback. There is a definite and obvious desire from the Directors to review the issues you highlight and I am confident that that desire will translate into positive change throughout the coming year and into the future. Once again, thank you for sending us your comments as it is through feedback that we learn and introduce change.

Pros

Good location. Was entry into the energy industry. Taught me valuable lessons.

Cons

I should have written this review years ago. When I started working at Elexon it was a positive experience. I got on well with my team and enjoyed the work that I was doing. However, I soon began to notice that the team was quite siloed. I also found it difficult working with management who were often so busy that I couldn't ask for help / advice. I wanted to do well throughout my probationary period, but unfortunately I did make quite a few mistakes. I really needed help and asked for help whenever I could. However, because management were so busy, they could barely spare me any time. I started working early, late and over the weekends to try and get back on track but I just couldn't prevent this downward spiral. I ended up dreading coming into work. Elexon did have a work buddy program but it seemed that this program was only available to people that had already passed their probationary period. Things all came to a head at the end of my probation after six months of employment. I had a meeting with management in the morning where we agreed that things hadn't gone that great and that they were considering extending my probation. However, next thing I knew on the same day, I was put in another meeting with management and HR where I was informed me that I had failed my probationary period and that I would need to leave the office immediately. I was quite shocked. I told them that I had tried so hard to do well but nothing I said would sway their decision. The worst part was where I was escorted to my desk to collect my things in front of the entire team. Nobody would speak to me or even look at me. It was absolutely humiliating and I will never forget it. Looking back it it now, I do admit that the role and I were not a great fit. However, I can't forgive Elexon for how things ended and the lack of support I received whilst working there.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and candid account of your experience. It is positive to hear that your early time at Elexon, your team relationships, and exposure to the energy sector provided value. I am genuinely sorry to read how your experience progressed, particularly regarding the support you received and the way your probation outcome was handled. We take this type of feedback seriously, particularly where it relates to support during probation and how colleagues are treated at critical moments. Your comments on siloed working, limited management availability, and the need for more structured support, including regular check-ins and earlier intervention, are well made. These are critical areas for us, and we are continuing to strengthen our approach to onboarding, regular one-to-ones, and early performance support to ensure colleagues receive the guidance they need from the outset. I am particularly concerned to hear how your exit was managed, and I am sorry that this was your experience. Thank you again for your honesty. Feedback of this nature is invaluable in helping us identify where we need to improve and ensuring we take meaningful action. Brett Buchanan Head of Resourcing
