Pros
I learned a lot at this job! Going through two busy seasons on the largest client at my office definitely taught me a lot about audit and accounting. It felt like there was always more to learn. There were some fun people to work with, but the bad part of the job never made up for that.
Cons
I just found out this week that I was getting laid off. Better yet, I found out while I was on vacation with my in-laws. The cherry on top is that I actually found out from someone else on my level who texted me their condolences. Turns out, this had been spread around the entire office before it was ever brought to my attention. This all comes right after I was the only person remaining on one of the audit engagements and was required to pick up the pieces everyone had left behind, dealing with a deadline that kept being moved up. I was completely blindsided. Of course, they said it had nothing to do with my performance, but it begs the question "why me?" Was it because I decided to leave "early" at 5pm just to spend 20 minutes eating dinner with my wife before working all the way until I closed my eyes to go to sleep? Was it because I didn't attend all of the happy hour functions? Who knows. The gossip at the Minneapolis office, particularly on my team, was unmatched. I am not going to pretend like I am perfect in any manner, but the way that everyone would talk about their coworkers behind their backs was appalling. One of the new staff on the team was made fun of constantly, with screenshots of her emails and stories being passed around all the time. On top of this, many of the partners act unprofessional and encourage this behavior in others. It made me uncomfortable seeing how they acted at social gatherings. During this past busy season, I had bi-weekly check ins with all of my teammates, who constantly told me that I was doing a great job AND was improving in all of my weak areas. It still wasn't enough to keep my job. Besides having to work like a dog for several months during busy season, the pay is significantly lower than other jobs with the same experience.
