Pros

students are awesome and the view from the building is amazing.

Cons

- there's no opportunities for growth. only 3 lead teacher positions which are occupied by long term employees, returnee or transferred from another EC school. - the management and staff can demand a lot from teachers without really consulting what we want - staff arent always supportive of teachers but look to us to blame for poor student survey results - teachers dont get access to the building 24 hours - there are such silly rules as time goes on such as no food or drinks in the new classrooms and more mundane responsibilities are thrown onto teachers - no respect for teachers. some of us might be taking this as a job to pay the bills but not all of us. EC is the perfect place to go if you want your passion to burn out. no wonder so many people keep leaving.

Dear Colleague, Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I’m pleased that you’ve had a positive experience with our students. Regarding your other comments, I’d like to address each in turn. Firstly, you state that there are no opportunities for growth, but very recently there was an ADoS position available at EC New York which was announced internally; there were no applications from EC New York teachers. In relation to your comments on consultation, teachers are being consulted via teachers meetings, focus groups and other channels. Just recently, the Center Director has initiated additional one-to-one meetings with the teachers to consult and obtain their feedback on a number of issues. The EC New York management team use student data to implement positive change. With building access, the building security rules are established by the building administration and supported by EC rules. If any employee needs access to the building for professional purposes beyond working hours, EC NY admin staff members with access are able to accompany the employee to the building. The ‘no food, no drink in the classroom’ policy is in place because the new classrooms have carpets, and the management team at EC New York want to keep the learning environment clean and tidy for our students. It’s a fairly standard policy. Finally, can I just reiterate that at EC we recognise that our teachers are the life-blood of our organisation. They are the main point of contact for our students, and our business relies on the delivery of high-quality education and first-class customer service. We actively encourage all employees to ask questions, discuss suggestions, and address problems or concerns. Thank you for taking the time to share your views with us – should you wish to discuss your concerns directly, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. Julian Bell Global HR Director

Pros

I’ve met many amazing students who make this work environment bearable.

Cons

EC has never cared about its employees and always finds ways to lowball people, even people who have been committed to EC for a decade. When they are going through rough times, they can attack the pays of teacher and student services coordinators on less than a day’s notice. It is rude of you to ask people to take the time to go through online trainings only to give them last minute notice that you aren’t giving them any teaching hours. It’s rude to tell your workers you want them to work x hours this week but schedule a fake check in call the following day just to lay them off before they even get to finish the work week.

Pros

it's a job that paid some bills

Cons

there is way too much workload for the given amount of pay. your work and efforts are never recognized because your managers will be very demanding and needy. Many of the coworkers are unreliable. Different departments often do not communicate well and don't get along.

Dear Colleague Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you feel it was the worst company you’ve worked at. It’s difficult to comment on your specific circumstances without knowing what your role was or where you worked. However, I can comment on the points you have raised. Firstly, workloads can be high – especially in the summer months when we’re at our busiest. We acknowledge that, and work hard to try and ensure our employees maintain a good work/life balance. Our pay scales are competitive within our industry, and we strive to maintain them as such. We disagree that our managers are overly demanding/needy or that our co-workers are unreliable. We pride ourselves on delivering the highest quality education to our students, and recognise that excellent delivery of service comes from looking after our people – a fact well understood by our managers and delivered on day-in day-out by our teams. Communication is always a challenge in a large, globally spread organisation, but we have a wide-ranging strategy that ensures we communicate well. As for how people get along, I think we have a very healthy work environment, which is backed up by our consistently high engagement scores. Thank you again for taking the time to share your views with us – should you wish to discuss anything further, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me directly. Julian Bell Global HR Director
