Rescinded my offer 1 week before my contract was meant to start after making me sign my offer letter twice, having me relocate to Berlin and take an apartment lease in order to finalize the process. This decision took advantage of a grey area in German labor law to avoid any fines/tax implications on the employer's side and as a result, took away any options I had for unemployment benefits, healthcare insurance, and residency. After delivering the news, there was a 2 week period of silence before I heard anything back on how they would attempt to remedy the situation by paying me off. They offered me a small severance and a fraction of the fees I had incurred moving country. When I requested that they cover more of this cost, the HR team pushed back and implied to me that I should be grateful that they were doing anything at all because this wasn't required of them. A tip to a company that pushes culture and people as part of it's CSR and marketing - you are responsible for your candidates if you extend an offer, fly them to Germany, and have them commit to your company. You should be embarrassed with how your team handled this. I'm giving 1 star because of the kindness of other staff in a different department that pushed on this on behalf to get me answers. If not, this would be a well deserved ZERO.
