      Go forward not backwards

      Pros

      The golden-age of the Covata engineering culture was amazing (2013-2016) - a highly collaborative team that can reflect back on issues and learn from mistakes to drive things forward. I am sure if you are lucky enough to talk to any engineer that was working at Covata during this period will agree.

      Cons

      With recent downsizing and restructuring, the engineering culture that was once there has been fast disappearing if not gone all together - a lot of strong and talented people have been let go or decided to move on. Had there been stronger direction and coordination from management to tie together all aspects of the company, great things could have been accomplished.

      Good work/life balance but poor management.

      Pros

      Good salary and flexibility to implement procedures and processes suitable to your area of expertise. Good work and life balance.

      Cons

      Management was weak, lacking appropriate field knowledge and seemingly disinterested in improving products. There were some very good and smart people to work with, although many of them have now left. Within the last year, management rarely empowered their staff (often discouraging them at times) to make product improvements and frequently turned away good ideas.

      Think long and hard before working at Covata

      Pros

      Covata has a decent amount of money in the bank. That is not a very good reason to work there however. Applied security is an interesting space, and there is a lot of potential. A ten year old company that has failed to achieve revenue demonstrates issues with execution.

      Cons

      This list is only valid at the time of writing (May, 2017). Things may change to invalidate points. The company has little to no revenue, with a low likelihood of gaining significant revenue in the short to medium term. The company is hence operating off of raised capital. Covata is bleeding staff. In 2017, the company has downsized from around fifty employees to just over twenty. Most engineers have left the company. There is no one with a strong security technology background leading and driving the company forward. The ten year old company has had seven different CEOs. Covata is a hot potato.
