Pros

Ability to move fast and make big changes with minimal oversight. The company's mission of helping independent Asian businesses is noble and there are people who really believe in it at the company. Health coverage is standard and acceptable, employer covers 70% of employee and 35% of dependents.

Cons

Significantly below market compensation. No real opportunity for growth because there are no formal titles or salary bands, so nothing to benchmark against. Overall benefits package is weak, they have no Life or AD&D coverage and the 401k doesn't match. The biggest con, though, is the company's truly ineffectual leadership. The CEO has surrounded himself with yes-men (and they are almost entirely men). CFO and CTO are the two other executives, the COO is on his way out as well even though he was the only one with any real experience running an operationally demanding business. The company has a tendency to reverse major strategic decisions back and forth over the course of weeks. Leadership allows the regional teams to run as independent franchisees which has led to a lot of shady and borderline illegal business practices. Anyone trying to fix this centrally is actively discouraged from putting controls and process on local operations by the executives. They make decisions about product and new business verticals with no forethought or research and don't take the time to listen to employees with experience to implement these things properly. All in all, the company takes advantage of it's employees to the nth degree. Stay away.

Pros

Typical start-up in the sense that you can get a lot of experience if placed in the right role on the right team. There are some fantastic, genuine, and kind people here with whom I really enjoyed working.

Cons

CEO and CTO in particular have minimal to no business savvy and have created internal politics that allows local city teams to operate with complete autonomy, leading to irresponsible spending. Favoritism and internal politics win over sound strategy and logic. Frustrations with an ability to accomplish effective work have led to significant departures, including the COO, head of recruiting, and head of business development in the same week. Additionally, there is minimal to no genuine appreciation for hourly workers (customer support team, operations specialists, etc.) that comprise ~70% of Chowbus's headcount. Due to the outdated technology and software the app uses, all of the "Backend" work is incredibly manual to update, making incremental progress towards KPIs and operational efficiency nearly impossible. Strategic decisions at the top continue to be flawed and the company is on a severe decline as COVID restrictions are lifted. Additionally, several rounds of layoffs were made with ZERO advance notice to employees, which significantly damaged morale and led to further turnover among newly disengaged employees. There are SO many more legitimate and promising startups out there. Invest in yourself and your career (and avoid Chowbus).

Pros

Moves fast, likely have lots of ownership, data availability

Cons

I came here to echo a lot of the thoughts from others here, unfortunately. The politics at the company are strong with a lot of senior leadership doing what they want and favoring the people close to them. If you are not Chinese, you likely will not succeed and you are more likely to be laid off. I don't agree with the direction of leadership and lost a lot of respect in the way many meetings were led. They spent a lot of money in the wrong places last year and I'd be concerned as an investor that they aren't focused on the right things. In the long-term, I don't think there is a true competitive advantage. If Uber Eats or Doordash simply hired the right people and focused more on support in Chinese, I think this company would be crushed. Some shady practices and some people were just awful to work with.
