Pros

Company has a decent brand name within the tech industry but unsure of how long that would last. They pay decent salaries for non-profit standards.

Cons

Terrible culture with lots of favoritism and politics If you have a strong relationship with the people in power you can get away with ANYTHING; even when the company is firing half of its staff and shutting down profitable departments and programs; you can stay on with a high salary even if your projects have been mildly successful or failures. The company says it supports Blacks and Latinxs yet provides golden parachutes to whites in position of power and little to nothing to Black and Latinx employees at all levels. Company assured employees things were going well until one day they laid off almost half of the company and blocked access to all accounts immediately.

Pros

Great mission and vision. Diverse staff, great work-from-home policy, great opportunity to meet people in the tech industry, great location to transportation, good pay for a nonprofit, decent office

Cons

In this toxic work environment, where people are stressed out and under capacity almost 24/7, there are not many opportunities for career advancement within the org, especially if you aren't "friends" with senior leaders. Executive level staff has history of unjustly interrogating and firing younger staff without warning and not listening to critical feedback. The org really lacks strong leaders and commitment to values. The org has a great mission but is not working towards it properly. They care more about the money and are willing to fire young Black and Latino staff , lie about organizational restructuring promises, sacrifice values, hire obedients, and foster an abusive and stressful work environment all under the guise of fighting white supremacy. Org is very hierarchical and lacks transparency on any level. The board is also very disengaged from what's happening in the office.

Pros

Visible positive impact on students. If you're able to volunteer with any of the student programs or work on the Fellows team, you'll feel more connected to the organization's mission . Some incredible co-workers. You'll find that most of the organization's achievements are driven by intelligent, exceptionally driven people. You'll just wish that they were appreciated more, and that others didn't take credit for their work. Fun events. You'll get to go to a lot of parties and meetups, where you can network and find a better job.

Cons

Great reputation is based on one successful program and some basic talking points, repeated over and over. High turnover rate. At least 19 in one year. A few people were fired, but most decided to leave. The internal messaging around this is that it's normal for tech, or that it's just what happens when you hire millenials.. except this is a nonprofit with no technical staff and people with different levels of experience left. Favored staff are allowed a disproportionate share of resources and can operate with little insight or oversight. A lot of ideas with no planning or follow through, which means that some of the opportunities advertised to students will never materialize. Less senior staff are expected to save the day and deliver results, without support or clear parameters. All of these concerns have been brought to leadership by multiple people over years.
