Fulfilling job, poor company

Pros

The students were mostly friendly and willing to listen and learn and being able to teach them was enjoyable and fulfilling, which was the only thing that encouraged me to stay. I was also paid well, although I was an exception, with most of my colleagues being paid poorly despite performance.

Cons

The management of the company is overall disorganised, ineffective and at times unpleasant to work with. Staff are removed from shifts and then not offered new ones for no reason. Some took exam leave, which was approved and then they were never offered a shift again. Also, there were periods where we did not have a manager (once for around 4 months) and the running of the centre was left to the tutors, with no training. This, along with the lack of communication that head office has with staff and the excessive workload, makes it an unpleasant work environment. Further to this, employees were instructed to leave positive reviews on this website and google reviews for the company, so many of the the reviews posted do not reflect the true opinions of employees.

Horrible Company

Pros

I cannot think of any

Cons

I would put 0 stars if possible. The management is poor and the operation of the head office is even worse. I requested a pay rise 3 times considering the fact that I was being paid below minimum wage, and heard no response whatsoever. If you are looking to apply as a tutor, look elsewhere as your time as a tutor will not be valued at Boost "Education". The company seem to be more interested in profiteering as opposed to providing a quality service of tutors alongside decent pay.

Poor place to work

Pros

Banter with other tutors over how poorly the business is run. Maybe an option if you have nothing on your CV. Will teach you how NOT to run a company.

Cons

Organisation and management of the company is incredibly bad, considering the company has been around since 2009. I have no idea how they still operate. Tutors will be expected to mark students work if there is no time to do so during the session. This is unpaid. If you're thinking of being an 11+ tutor here, don't. The parents that sign their kids up for 11+ tution ask you to mark a ridiculous amount of work to the point where you are working more hours unpaid than paid. If you get an interview, you've basically got the job. The 'interview' lasts for a couple of minutes and my interviewer openly said that it was just to make sure I wasn't 'weird or anything'. The rest of the 'interview' is free labour for the company as they want you to stay for 3 hours and tutor the kids to see how you do. There is definitely a gender pay gap (pay has been discussed amongst tutors) and pay is calculated by age. It may be possible to get a 10% payrise after a year (so an extra 75p per hour in my case) but everyone that I have talked to have said that the CEO has always found a reason not to give it to them. It is no suprise then that most tutors including myself left this summer. There is no training, you are just thrown in and expected to understand how everything works.
