Pros

Literally given cases within first week to run, left to own devices a lot of the time, have your own autonomy.

Cons

Given cases within the first week with little guidance, shouted at if anything is wrong (despite lack of support and training) and a boss who has mood swings faster and more dangerous than Mariah Carey. Always pushed to make cases escape files. Not much continuity, told to do things one way one day and the next could be different, ad hoc meetings,

Thank you for your comment. I am sorry that your experience at Bison had not been a positive one. The work we do is highly demanding and it’s not for everyone. As a new recruit or fee earner in the relevant department, there is an expectation you should at least possess a reasonable standard of legal knowledge and legal training at University. In addition to a law degree, you would have also attended a postgraduate degree such as LPC or a BVTC in order to work at Bison. In other word, the assumption is that you are legally knowledgeable, capable, competent at some level, and hopefully possess some common sense. I appreciate that everyone is different and would require different level of support and guidance. But there must be a base level. Unfortunately, the base level is high and should remain high due to the type and nature of the work we do. You will agree that at Bison we operate on a simple supervision structure- one supervisor supervises no more than 2 juniors. I am somewhat surprised by your comment regarding lack of supervision as I often receive complaints from colleagues that I micro manage too much! A career in law is fast pace and changeable all the time. Ability to adopt to changes is crucial. But yes, I do agree that continuity is important, so will take on board your comment on this issue. With reference to mood swing- Mariah Carey. I am now on mood stabilizer so fingers crossed. Love DT

Pros

Absolutely none worst place I've ever worked - please stay away - unsure how this firm is still in existence

Cons

No structured training you are left to just get on with whatever is thrown at you. Manager changes his mind every five minutes about the procedure for visiting clients. The lack of training makes you feel very awkward when visiting vulnerable clients. Do not be lured in with the dangling carrot of a training contract. This was promised to me in interview and never mentioned afterwards. Awful salary for the work you do. My advice is to stay away.

Hello keyboard warrior I wonder if you were the same poster…….. With reference to training and structure, see earlier comment. With reference to dangling training contract – that’s simply not true. All those with LPC that had completed 12 months employment are either currently on a Training contract or commencing a Training Contract. In fact, all those currently a trainee had been awarded a training contract no more than 7 months of employment. Our website members’ page speaks for itself. “This was promised to me in interview and never mentioned afterwards” – This is not a genuine comment as I would never promised a TC during an interview. Our policy on TC is clear. Fee Earner with LPC will be offered TC between 6 – 12 months into employment, in any event no more than a year following employment. My view is that a year is long enough time to consider if you are suited for the firm or vice versa. I agree, the starting salary is awful, but this is taking into account the type of work we do, we are a legal aid firm after all. In addition, unless you possess previous paralegal experience, it is difficult to justify anything more than low starting base salary during your first 6 months probation period. Perhaps you should have gone to a commercial firm instead of legal aid firm Those who performed well would receive a pay rise every 3 months during the first year of employment.

Pros

Hands on experience Some nice colleagues

Cons

They throw you in the deep end with no prior experience, do not care about the clients or the staff. Management are awful and make you feel horrible and small and the director only cares about money. You will have trauma once you leave this job so I would advise not to even bother starting. Minimum wage, but make you spend your own money on expenses and take ages to pay it back, put you in dangerous situations, treat you like dirt and expect you to work in your free time/after work/holiday, make false accusations and create a lot of anxiety in your position. Clear hierarchy and management have favourites. Worst company I have EVER worked for. School playground atmosphere. Very uncomfortable.
