Pros

Most people working there have the best intentions (except for money-driven managers) It is a good learning organization

Cons

Low Pay for the work Too many projects handled by too few people. Business chases the money and gets contracting opportunities that then passes onto Engineering to fulfill. This creates a skewed work-life balance where you give up a lot of your life. Since their motives and projects are 'socially beneficial' there is a lot of pressure to deliver.

Great place in theory

Pros

The mission is great and they really want to make a difference. There are a few genuinely smart and passionate people.

Cons

There's a massive disconnect between the execs and the lowest level employees. People are expected to take on more work without more pay and without any thought to what the actual impact of doing yet more things will have. They do a lot only OK rather than a little bit wonderfully. There is little consequence for incompetence.

Benetech Response

Thanks for spending the time reflecting on your time at Benetech, and bringing up the pros and cons from your personal experience. I completely agree about our mission and that our team is here to make a difference. We attract smart, passionate and committed people because of our mission and our work. It certainly isn’t for the stock options, because as a nonprofit charity, we don’t have any! While our salaries are high by nonprofit standards, we will never win a bidding war with Facebook or an overfunded startup. Our mission is to respond to huge social needs, and we are always asked to do far more than we have the time or the budget to do. If we don’t do the work, it typically won’t be done. So, yes we do stretch to do more all of the time. One thing I can tell you is that the intense pressure to put in long hours and sacrifice your personal and family life is not part of the Benetech culture. Flexibility is, combined with the expectation that you will do a great job. Many of us have been in high-pressure startup environments, and the fact that we can use our skills to do social good and have a life is a great bargain. Finally, we’re very proud of the lower turnover rate and longevity of service of many of our team compared to typical tech companies. We think it’s a real asset in the social impact field, where relationships and trust are so important. Jim Fruchterman, Benetech CEO

Pros

Benetech tackles difficult problems with software that have scalable social benefit, but limited financial benefit to attract mainstream for-profit software companies. The company is a learning organization and has a great set of values or "organizational truths", which include catering to employee's personal needs. The engineering team is top notch and is a mature organization with an agile development process and a modest set of tools and infrastructure.

Cons

The nonprofit funding and financial model creates constraints around innovation, maintenance and technical debt management, seizing upon new opportunities and paying competitive software developer salaries, particularly in the SF Bay Area. The leadership acknowledges those constraints and is actively working on reducing those constraints.
