Nice place to start with many benefits, but also weaknesses

Pros

- relaxed company culture - no strict hierarchy - nice office building - free snacks, lunch and dinner delivered to the office - team building activities

Cons

- company culture TOO relaxed sometimes: it feels a lot like a high school with "the cool kids", "the new kids" etc. Many unprofessional relationships between colleagues as well which of course leads to less objectivity in the working environment - some people (not the developers though) have management/leading positions even though they are quite incompetent and unqualified, they do not really know what they are doing and are thus harming the entire team or even the company´s image (eg by straight out embarassing marketing campaigns for other countries) - a general danger: the company should attach more importance to the quality of its products and services than its image and impression on the media/people outside of the company, many projects get cancelled because quality was severly lacking and/or because so-called "managers" just did not listen to their team - give real tasks and a certain kind of responsability to your student helpers, they are just sitting around, ready and willing to help, but you tend to give them nothing to do FOR MONTHS or even refuse to talk to them at all like they belong to a second class of people - the team building activities are not for everyone, but only for selected people (interns, student helpers, or non-permanent employees do not get to participate in everything) - many interns, especially in recruitment, get exploited, they have a significantly higher workload than some full-time employees but have to live with the uncertainty of non-permanent contracts which might or might not be extended - for another contract for only 6 months - the internal feedback system (everyone gives feedback to someone about their colleagues) is a nice idea, but tends to get abused for gossip, childish/ridiculous feedback, or just unfair and never heard before criticism. If someone has a problem, it would make so much more sense to address this directly with your colleagues instead of collecting evidence and complaining to someone else

A toxic workplace

Pros

Bending Spoons pays quite well and offers great benefits especially to certain employees. If you are hired as a Spooner then you will be given many opportunities. The office is in a nice location and easy to get to. A fully stocked kitchen with food and drink available. I met a few lovely people while working for the company.

Cons

Unfortunately Bending Spoons doesn't believe that all of their employees throughout the company should be treated in the same way and this is where the benefits given and the treatment of employees differs dramatically. “Staff” members are treated as lesser beings within the company that shouldn't expect to be treated in exactly the same way as "Spooners". The office management shows absolutely no trust in staff members and micromanages to the point of suffocation. The People Operations team, which is composed of a few very nice people and then other members that should never be in a position of power within a company. Bending Spoons wants to be seen as a high flying, hip and trendy company that is politically correct in every way but when it comes down to it the behavious and attitudes I witnessed showed me that it has very much a village mentality.

Pros

- Amazing pay and benefits. - Chance to work on a variety of good projects used by a large user base worldwide, therefore you can learn a lot. - Very good on CV.

Cons

The company knows how to promote itself very well, but this can mask some harsh realities. - The illusion of a "transparent" flat hierarchy masks a top-down culture. Leaders can make cuts even for high performers, even without knowing them, talking to them or consulting their actual team at all. - Sometimes, micromanagement. - High turnover rate, with someone joining or leaving every other week. - There's always the need to mask or justify your "mistakes" (even when they're not so), due to an hidden blaming culture. - The company doesn't seem to be suited for humble or shy people, since someone might take advantage of them or walk all over them. Assertiveness seems the key to navigate the company culture. - Management/leadership seems to be searching for very excited individuals: if you're not always like that, you might be misjudged. - In general, company leadership culture prioritizes money above anything else, and this negatively affects the employers, the products and the end users (having a healthy user base has never been a priority, as far as everything is legal and makes money).
