6AM City has lost the plot

Pros

- Editors and marketing team folks are really, really fantastic people. Some of the best you will ever work with. - If they decide to keep things actually local, you will get to make incredible connections in the community and have truly amazing life experiences.

Cons

6AM City was once a place that focused on something this world lacks: hyper-local, encouraging journalism and content. In the last 12-18 months, 6AM City has completely abandoned this model and is now simply a content machine to make as much money as possible, probably to compensate for the unfortunate business decisions made 3 years ago to expand to 20+ markets with no where near enough research or funding. Fantastic employees have been suffering from those decisions three years ago ever since. In my 2 and a half years at 6AM City, I witnessed 5 layoffs/restructures of the organization. Y'all -- stay away. I wish I could tell you you had any job security here, but you do not. Since their deal with TEGNA, 6AM City has half-closed markets down in various cities where they now have one person from across the country produce weekly content for. How is this hyper-local journalism? Why is someone from the Midwest or East Coast reporting on the best restaurants in Sacramento? It is so disingenuous and so far from what this mission was two years ago. It is really, really sad. The whiplash I experienced working here of being moved around teams, being given a different managing editor four times in 10 months, and after 2 and a half years being laid off...it's really something. I wish I had more positive things to say about my time at 6AM City, but I honestly feel screwed over after the amount of effort and trust I put in that the leadership here would finally get it right. Also -- if you are a City Editor, good luck taking your unlimited PTO. You have to prewrite content for a majority of your time off and it is almost more stressful to take a vacation than it is to just work. The support is not there.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for recognizing the dedication of our editors and marketing team. We’re proud of the passion our people bring to serving their communities. We also acknowledge your concerns about restructuring and local coverage. Over the past two years, 6AM City has made difficult but necessary decisions to create a sustainable and profitable business model. Centralizing certain content functions has helped reduce the burden on local teams, while still allowing us to highlight what makes each city unique. Our goal remains the same: to celebrate cities by producing engaging, positive local content while building a stable future for our employees. We are committed to refining our operations, improving support for editors, and staying focused on our mission.

Pros

You work with an extremely talented group of writers and content creators from all over the country. Was a great way to get your start in a journalism and social media field. Learn how to work in a fast-paced, flexible environment.

Cons

It is truly disappointing to see how this company has declined into a workplace that I would never recommend working for. The first year of employment was one of the best working experiences I've ever had for a product I truly believed in. Now 6AM City is completely unrecognizable, between a shift away from a hyperlocal product with local experts backing it to products informed by AI and people who know nothing about the cities they are writing about. The amount of layoffs this company has experienced in the past two years is troubling and whether you're a tenured employee or a recent hire, you're subject to getting laid off. Ultimately, the leadership is poor and the product itself has declined to a point it's not worth the distress of wondering every day if you're going to lose your job for reasons that are out of your control.

Pros

Working with the other editors.

Cons

Leadership doesn't know what they're doing and there's no job security.
