      Intermediate Software Engineer Interview

      22 Jun 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Wellington, Wellington
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Xero (Wellington, Wellington) in Apr 2025

      Interview

I only got as far as the phone screening interview. I was referred through a senior engineer at Xero. A month after I was referred, I was sent a link to schedule my phone interview. The soonest available interview time slot was over 2 weeks later, and the interviewer was based on the other side of the world. The morning of the phone interview, I answered the call but the call sound quality was very poor which made it difficult to hear a few of the questions. I was not progressed to the next interview stage, though I didn't find out until over a week later.

      Software Engineer - Intermediate Interview

      19 Feb 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Xero (London, England) in Dec 2023

      Interview

During my interview process, the interviewers and talent experts were respectful. The interview lasted for 70 days from the first contact. During the first arranged interview, I waited for 20 minutes, but no one joined. Assuming that they didn't need a new employee, I didn't follow up. However, after a few days, the interviewer asked me to reschedule the interview. During the first phone interview, we discussed the job description and requirements, and I explained my skills and experience. After following up, I was told that my skills were suitable for the position, and I was given a technical test that involved a refactoring project. After completing and submitting the project, they replied that they were satisfied with my work. In the next technical interview, I was asked about my approach in completing the project, as well as some questions about project management and testing approaches. Despite my resume indicating my skill level and my positive technical test results, after 70 days of the interview process, I was informed that they needed someone with cloud or infrastructure experience and integrated test skills which I didn't have in the first place! However, the job title was intermediate, and I had enough skills for the position. At the end of the job description, it was written: "If you are excited about this role, but your past experience doesn't align perfectly, we encourage you to apply anyway." However, you need to be perfect anyway!
