A recruiter from "Motion Recruitment" (recruiting firm in Irvine, CA) contacted me via LinkedIn. Her note said that she was recruiting for an Engineering Manager position at PriceSpider and she came across my LinkedIn profile, and "Your profile really stood out so I wanted to connect and send a JD." She attached a Job Description (JD) for an Engineering Manager position at PriceSpider. Although I was not proactively looking, I believe it's important to keep an eye out for opportunity, and talk to recruiters to keep a pulse on the external job market. My phone call with Motion Recruitment lasted 30 minutes. They structured the call as starting with my background, then talking about the PriceSpider position. We spent 20 minutes talking about my resume and background. Then at the end, the recruiter said that PriceSpider already filled the Engineering Manager position, and I wouldn't be a good fit for the position anyway. But would I be willing to be considered for other contract-to-hire positions the firm was recruiting. This was a classic "bait-and-switch" where a recruiter "baits" a candidate with one job opportunity, but then "switches" the candidate to other contract-to-hire positions. Not sure who is to blame here: (a) PriceSpider doing some strange exercise to learn about the local candidate market, or (b) recruitment firm going rogue. But it was not a good look for PriceSpider.
