      Technical Support Representative Interview

      15 Jun 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at WP Engine (Austin, TX) in May 2018

      Interview

The interview process was very long and drawn out. They put you in with two of the support team managers to discuss what I understood was work ethic / culture fit. They then sent in two higher up techies (I don't recall their positions) to grill you on your tech skill and ability. The latter of which was very unnerving. Essentially they ask you question after question very quickly and forcefully. Many times they're hard questions which they expect you to answer correctly each time. Even if you answer the question correctly, they then fire back with follow ups to push you to answer more in-depth. The questions themselves may not be hard to answer from a technical perspective but the way they bully you around with the pacing was off-putting. I even asked them after the interview was done "Do you grill everyone that hard?". They responded with "we want to see how you will react under pressure". After that, I am grateful I do not work there, I do not want to be subjugated to situations where I am under pressure, especially at a job where your primary task is to interact and empathize with customers in a calm and collected manner. How bad can the customers be that you need to be good at acting under pressure in order to help them? It did not make sense to me.

      Interview

Lack of clarity surrounding the role itself, with the initial phone interview contradicting the position listed on the website. Interviewer was over 10 minutes late, and seemed distracted and scattered. Was told they wanted to continue the process and that another interview would be set up. They told me to look out for another email to set a time for that interview in the next couple of days. After a week there had been no emails, so I followed up. Received an incomplete template email saying they were no longer interested in hiring for the position.
