      Software Engineer (Android Developer) Interview

      2 Feb 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Vevo

      Interview

I applied online, but it took like a month just to schedule a phone screen with a recruiter. Finally, we got to chat, but this was the worst phone chat with a recruiter ever. 1) She didn't sound interested in speaking with me from the start. I don't think she paid attention to what I said, and she kept asking, "I don't understand what you said." I had to even ask her so many time if she followed what I said. 2) Without introducing herself and the company, she just asked questions right away. I felt uncomfortable. 3) She asked how much I'm making currently, and I said "I'd rather talk about it when both of us think it's a good fit for each other." which is perfectly fine to say that. Then she kinda attacked verbally me not revealing my current salary, saying "I asked you. You have to answer. It's a part of interview." It was very intimidating. I have never heard a recruiter who is attacking verbally because a candidate wants to talk about the current salary in the late stage of interview process. 4) Once I didn't reveal my current salary, she just stopped the interview and said, "I'll collect what you've answered and send it to the hiring manager." Is Vevo's criteria to find good candidates is decided how much a person is making? It's ridiculous. 5) I asked what's hiring/interview process at Vevo and she didn't explain until I asked three times. I asked "Is it going to be a phone technical interview or coding challenge?" It's not professional not to explain a candidate about the interview process. I had to ask three times. Worst experience ever.

Thank you for taking the time to offer us feedback on our interview process. We take pride in the interview experience our candidates have with Vevo and look to offer a process that enables you to learn about our company, the role and culture, and for us to assess candidates based on their experience, interests, cultural fit and technical skills. Our interview process typically takes 3-4 weeks from time of application through final interview and consists of several steps that vary depending on the type of role. For technical roles, this includes an initial phone screen, a technical phone screen, a code challenge and an in person interview. For all candidates, it is typical for us to ask about your current salary and also your salary expectations during our initial phone screen. We recognize that people are often looking for a salary increase over their last role and also for a role with more responsibilities. We also know that some people may even be willing to take pay cuts to find their dream job, especially if they are transitioning into a new industry that may have a differing pay structure. This question is not intended to compromise a candidate but rather to ensure alignment early in the process. We are respectful of your time and know that you are likely taking time away from a current job, your family or other priorities to spend time interviewing with us. We hope this provides useful insight to our hiring process.
