I originally applied for the position online. When I did so, they indicated that the position was based in Toronto.
I was schedule for a phone interview with their HR, went through the details of past experience etc. They then, gave me a pitch on the role. Normal stuff. It was then, after 30mins, did they reveal that the role was actually in Markham.
I think they have problems finding developers wanting to work in Markham, and they do a bait and switch like this. I pointed this out to them after the fact, and they try and dodge by saying that Markham is "part of the GTA", so they feel that this covers them.
However, it is a huge waste of everyone's time involved if they cannot travel that distance. In addition to this, the non-programming roles they have advertised, specify Markham as the location.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Univa (Markham, ON) in Jun 2019
Interview
3 weeks after applying online got an email from HR to setup a phone interview. Questions were mostly about my skills, past projects, and then some behavioral questions such as "What is your preferred managerial style?" and "What skills do you think are important for this role?" After a week got another email to setup a call for a technical interview. This was also describing my past projects but a lot more focused on technologies used. One of the first questions was "What do you know about us?" Univa has an open source project called Tortuga. Another question was "What is the biggest software challenge you had to solve?" Other questions were about certain technologies they use like configuration and automation tools such as Puppet. Also questions like "Do you know about ETL? GraphQL?" Then some questions like "Who was your greatest mentor and why?"
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Whats the biggest software challenge you had to solve? How did you make your programs memory efficient?
I was scheduled for a phone interview and on the day of the interview i asked to reschedule because something urgent came up at my work place. I emailed the HR said
" Thank you for your response and interest in the Product Manager opportunity at Univa. However, in assessing our needs this week, we have decided we will not be moving forward with your candidacy. We wish you the best in your job search. "
Its absurd, how can they not consider a candidate who was shortlisted and just say that on the face because they wanted to reschedule to another day.
