I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at UnitedHealth Group (Dallas, TX) in Sept 2011
Interview
I do think that having contacts does help, but UHG does interview based on applications it receives online. You start by going through the recruiting process and they take you to the next level. You can expect about 2-3 other interviews. I don't think their interviewing is quite as rigorous as some companies require. They do expect that you interview using the STAR interviewing process - Situational, Task, Action, Result. You do need to be very prepared.

Question 1
Name a time when your integrity was compromised, and what did you do about it?
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at UnitedHealth Group (Minneapolis, MN) in Sept 2019
Interview
Not too intense. Very straightforward. You meet with the director, the VP and possibly another director within the segment. Typical interview questions with no surprises. Just be prepared to provide examples to behavioral questions.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at UnitedHealth Group (New York, NY) in Mar 2015
Interview
I was emailed an invitation for a digital interview through HireVue. There is one practice question, and then five questions provided after the practice question. Each question appears on the screen, and you'll have thirty seconds to prepare your response. The response is scheduled for 3 minutes, and would suggest being succinct and clear in your responses as if you lose your train of thought, it is easy to get lost and lose the three minutes quickly.

Many many phone interviews, but I learned a lot about the company. I requested to speak with people doing the actual job and got honest info about pros and cons.
