      Flight Attendant Interview

      6 Apr 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Houston, TX
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at United Airlines (Houston, TX) in Mar 2015

      Interview

You are gathered into a large room as others come in. Many seemed nervous and out of place. Some were on edge. The competition is fierce. Some were very fake with their smile as they are trying to impress the Flight Attendants who might be watching the interactions. People be real. No matter what you do if the person interviewing you don't want you to go to training you won't make it. Remember they can only be so selective as they are receiving a lot of applicants. It is a high turnaround job. In other words, many leave the job after six months. If the pay was that good there would hardly be an opening. A presentation by one of the Flight Attendants about the company benefits is given followed by questions. don't waste your time asking silly questions about base and pay and schedule as much as I want ALL of you to ask: "By what criteria will you select the person to go to training?" The more you ask this question the more you will disempower them to have the leg over you. Write the answer down if it is given. When I asked this question there was a dancing around the question with no answer. keep in mind they will ask you to leave a secure job to go to some training (80% is passing score, Monday-Saturday and you get $20 a day for dinner at United during 5 week long training), unpaid and be on probation for eight months. Canada, Latin America and Caribbean is not international for United. By asking the right questions you will have the upper hand. People power. Be smart. What is United looking from you: Be gracious. Be the brand. Be predictable. Be the solution. How are they going to figure that you have what it takes? Poise Strong Presentation Ability to connect with people Being flexible These are not the smartest people interviewing you. If you appear too smart you might kiss the interview goodbye. Play the part if you really want the job. Lastly, at the end when they ask you if you have any questions If you want the job don't say nothing. Just thank them for their time. But, if you want to probe and risk loosing out ask: What does success as a flight attendant look like six months to a year from now? Then you will see if the Job is for you or not. Remember, you want to have the upper hand. I went in eyes wide open with nothing to lose. I can pay my bills. In fact, the hotel they carried the interview cost me $219 a night and I made sure I took the toiletries they provided cause I paid for them and the flight was for free. I did not drop what I had to do to fly to them. I did not mind paying for the hotel as they provide a shuttle and if the shuttle does not come they'll ask you to take a taxi and they'll pay the taxi. That is, the Hotel Marriott. Breakfast was not included in the hotel so I said, "you would think $219 would get you breakfast!" I was offered all you can eat buffet for $10 which I took. I made sure I ate a full breakfast. You'll have to pay for Internet at the Hotel. I made sure I was not going to pay for no internet. So, they provided me a code for free. My curiosity was driving me.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Tell me of a time you had fun at work. Only tell them about a project you had fun doing. Tell me of a time you had a difficulty with a co-worker. Tell the account with a happy ending. Tell me of a time you had a frown on your face at work. This question is very tricky as most of us do have bad days but you need to answer it in a way that reflects honesty. As in my case while employed at a certain job a co-worker left this world while at work. Naturally most of the other workers would not have a happy face for a period of time. Remember, create your story ahead of time before going into this interview. You need to lie to them as they will lie to you. This job is not guaranteed as you need to pass training and relocate (all out of your pocket ) and pass 8 months of probation with flying colors. You will need to give $100 deposit to hold your position for training and that money goes toward your uniform expense of $720. Yes, you will be on call. I was asked lots of questions. I would like to see you all make it. Remember, if you are called it is because you meet their requirement. However, I did ask them what would be the determining factor to hire someone to go to training. The interviewer danced around the question. So, this picked my interest to know what the answer is. It was after the interview I got it figured out. So, For United Airlines it is this: (1) Poise. when being interviewed keep your hands, not your arms folded. They are studying your body language. Feet flat on the floor. Lean slightly forward to show interest in the conversation. They take notes as you talk, but I was trying to figure out what was being written as I was being interviewed and she noticed that and told me she was just writing what I am saying. At the top corner of each page they write your answers on is a score that you are given. This score (later, tallied) determines if you get the Job or not. My first question I got a score of 3 ( I can add real quick in my head I felt she felt intimidated by me) thereafter she did not put the score seeing that I was reading the paper. (2) Strong presentation. Dress the part. Guys, get a hair cut and shave be sure you lint-roll your suit and make sure your jacket is not a different color from the pants. Be friendly but not fake, if you are not gay don't come off like that be yourself. (3) Ability to connect with People. this one is an easy one. and lastly (4) being flexible. Just tell them you will move to wherever they want you to move. I did not get the job because I was too busy reading her hands. I knew I intimidated her. I often do that because I like having the upper hand. I was so focus on figuring out what was being written as she was not looking at me. I am very observant nothing escapes my attention. I need to work on such. She finally asked a question that I knew was coming: What impression do others have of you when they meet you? So, I said they think I don't have a bad day because I seem so happy. She knew this was a lie caused I intimidated her. So, she asked the question again. I caught on to what she was trying to get to so I said, "people think because I am so nice they can take advantage of me but, I often see where they are coming from and I would quickly get out of the way. She knew I was lying. and I was lying. She said, "we're done. Do you have any questions for me? This is when I asked "what does success as a flight attendant look like in six months to a year from now?" knowing fully well the airline industry will have a hick-up and will need to lay off some people, which is a normal cycle in that industry. If you know you did all you can and did not get the job it is okay. It is not the end of the world. For me I was just looking for a job. I won't try another airline nor United again because they are other people who really want this more than I do. It is only fair to let them go for it. In the end, I got a pretty good insight into the airline industry as to how they select their folks to work for them. It was a positive experience but I would not try it again.

the face to face live video interview with a HR personnel. I collected all possible questions from reddit to glassdoor and formulate my answers and thought they're going to ask the same questions but they didn't. The HR kind of tell that I have a ready made answers so she stirred the interview differently so my answer will be organic. Thankfully I passed this 30 minute interview. The interviewer did not look interested because she is multi-tasking but best believe she is listening to your answers.

      Interview

I’m heading to the F2F interview in TX. Every step so far has not been difficult for me. I also have no prior knowledge in being a FA. The hardest part so far is probably just the nerves and anxiety. Just prep well, do some research, have some basic questions and answer prepared so that even if they ask a different question you can possibly use one of the scenarios of another question and tailor it to the new one.

      Interview

I conducted my online assessment with questions about company policy, seating charts and customer requests with what is allowed and what isn't. I took my time with every question and reviewed it twice before submitted and now I'am invited to the virtual interview.
