Letter indicated setting aside at least 90 minutes for Interview/Tour; Dress in casual slacks, comfortable shoes; Do not bring purses, wear jewelry, take cell phones/digital devices, etc... You show up, sign in & sit in a room with other applicants. We were all given a "Commitment to Work" letter to review basically spelling out the job pay/frequency, conditions and requirements-- Part-time only; Twilight or Mid-night shift; Very Intense physically demanding job to be performed in high temperatures exceeding 100 degrees frequently, no air-conditioning; They tout as a benefit of the job you're basically being paid to lose weight & get in shape! Loader or Unloader only--no ability to progress or perform another job/task; at least not until a certain amount of time in the existing position has been served (about 90 days); A new offering is that these employees WOULD be able to participate in the company's Stock Sharing/401k program; no other benefits, except a paycheck....at least not yet.
As UPS is a union company, run by the Teamsters, positions are allocated based on a seniority system. and the Company's expectations and promises: To provide FREE Medical/Vision/Dental care AFTER working one complete year from your date of hire. The HR Supervisor did a lot of talking, in a strong parental mode as there were a lot of young ppl there. Although he'd not met any of them, he seemed to treat them (us) as if we fit a "type" of person that applies for work at UPS that is undesirable. These infamous "they" come to work, late or want to quit after working a short time. (Kind of understandable, as He indicated UPS recently opened a new state-of-the-art distribution center, which we later toured. After security check, ear plugs distributed, quick tour given, met in another room, where more "weeding out" was done. Interested parties were encouraged to return the following evening for one-on-one interviews.
