      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      20 Mar 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Trunk Tools in Jan 2025

      Interview

Started with an intro call with engineering manager that was relaxed and enjoyable. Then I was sent a take-home coding exercise. There was no scaffold code or framework given to start from so it was very open ended. There was no guidance about how much time was expected to be spent on this. They offered 50 dollars in compensation; I interpreted this as adding a couple hours to a somewhat typical 2-hour code exercise. I would say I spent about 5 hours on the take home exam. At this point I waited over a week for a response and followed up: (An engineer had apparently forgotten to review the exam). I was then declined, with no notes or reasoning given. I requested feedback and did not receive any further reply. My solution for the exam definitely had significant effort invested, so this was very off-putting The later rounds referenced in the intro call were: 2 technical interviews regarding data modeling and then code strategy. Then two more interviews with VP engineering and CEO.
