      Entry-Level Software Engineer Interview

      27 Aug 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Tecture

      Interview

Applied to a position directly on their website. The CEO reached out for an initial conversation. I was surprised because instead of talking about my background and the role it broke out into a technical phone screen. Less conversational, straight to technical questions. There was no conversation about the company, role. I applied straight out of college and the impression that I got was that the interviewer was looking for someone with more experience at an entry-level salary.

I'm sorry that this individual did not have a more positive experience in their interview with me. I interview many people, and I've learned that everyone's experience in college and internships is different. When I interview a candidate for an entry-level position, the questions I ask are intended to gauge the level of experience obtained through coursework, personal projects and study, and internships. There are no "right" answers. That's the beauty of technology - there is often more than one way to solve a problem. Instead, the questions are intended to spark discussion so I can evaluate someone's thought process. I also offer every candidate the opportunity to ask me questions, and most ask questions about the company, the culture, and more. I'm sorry if I didn't provide more context in this case. I often learn a great deal about someone based on the types of questions that they ask. I'm guessing that this was probably a Zoom interview, which is how I've been interviewing people lately, but it's impossible to know for sure. I find Zoom to be a somewhat weird way to interview people, and I'm sorry if that contributed in any way. Finally, Tecture does not work with PHP, and I don't recall asking any questions about PHP. Perhaps that was confused with another interview elsewhere.
