      Marketing Interview

      1 Oct 2019
      Anonymous employee
      Oxnard, CA
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at SEED BEAUTY (Oxnard, CA) in Aug 2018

      Interview

I have a lot of mixed feelings when it comes to ColourPop. As a longtime fan, I was beyond excited when I not only got through my first interview call but also got to see the glorious company on-site and meet one of the iconic Marketing Managers (that I had always seen on IG stories). It was all great and my interview went very well (despite extreme butterflies), but here's where it gets messy. The HR team for Seed Beauty (the umbrella company) is absolute yikes. First of all, it took over a week of back-and-forth failed coordinations for the HR rep to finally let me know I got the job. I had already guessed I got the job based on the tone of her first email the day after my interview, but I had to wait a week despite countless emails siting my availability as almost all days. This disorganization aside, I was ecstatic and excited for what I thought would be the greatest internship ever. After my first call where I was told I got the job, and I confirmed that I would (of course!) love to accept. I was explicitly told by the HR rep that she could negotiate pay for me, and I told her my preferred number but also re-affirmed that I would like to accept the job regardless of pay (and fully acknowledging it as not a determining factor at all). Despite ALL of this - the HR rep failed to communicate for over a week and then comes back on a Friday afternoon to let me know that the position has now abruptly closed due to "business reasons". The email completely blindsided me and was extremely vague and general. I was led to guess that they couldn't meet the pay ask, and this may have been why. So I again had to emphasize I never cared about pay but merely took her up on her offer that I never would have asked if I had known my job offer could somehow be revoked. Nevertheless, she told me they closed it anyways and "sometimes budget fluctuates in business", and there was absolutely nothing to do. She gave me a generic reassurance that if I ever saw any future positions I was interested in, I could reach out again but everything felt incredibly disingenuous and completely inconsiderate of my time. The HR rep twisted what was communicated and all in all, it was one big mess that all fell through based on what I believe was poor communication from the get-go. After a whole month of excitement, making arrangements, and booking flights to move to LA, they suddenly closed the job and I was left in complete shambles. I had turned down full-time offers for what I thought was my dream job, and I was extremely heartbroken and disappointed (not only because of my excitement over the specific job but also because of my genuine love for the company prior to my interview). I was turned off by one of my absolute favorite companies and one that I had been a longtime fan of for years, so it was honestly all very tragic. I do hope the HR team grows to be more caring, organized, and communicative going forward.

      Interview

Had an initial phone screen with a member of HR and then a Zoom interview with the would be manager of the position. I had to do a skills assessment and then a presentation in my second interview. Both seemed to go well, but who knows? I never heard back and was ghosted, which I found to be a big red flag since I applied through an employee referral. Would have been nice to at least hear back after wasting my time on their assessment and presentation.
