Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Reveleer in Jun 2024

      Interview

I had a total of five interviews for this position: one with a recruiter, one with the Hiring Manager, and three with engineers. The interviews with the recruiter and Hiring Manager went well, as did the first of the three engineering interviews. In the first engineering interview, I spoke with a Developer. That interview went extremely well, and he expressed that he thought I would be a great person to work with. The second interview was with a QA "Engineer." I put engineer in quotes because it was evident during the interview that she lacked the knowledge expected of an SDET, especially concerning software engineering and QA automation processes. Within the first 10 seconds, I could tell she did not like me. Her attitude and body language were quite negative. She did not introduce herself or allow me to introduce myself; instead, she immediately began asking questions back-to-back. Despite this, I am confident that I answered every question correctly. Additionally, her thick Indian accent made many of her questions unclear, and when I asked for clarification, she seemed annoyed and often could not provide clarity. It was also apparent that she was unfamiliar with several processes related to Cypress automation. For instance, when I explained methods for validating text on a page, she incorrectly interpreted one of my examples as API testing. I clarified why it was not API testing and why it is considered a best practice for UI testing, but she seemed to misunderstand and moved on, appearing to believe I was incorrect. Another notable instance was when she asked about my experience with Postman. I mentioned my six years of experience and how I use it to manually validate tests. Her response was, "So, you’re saying that you can’t use it for automation?" which was not what I had implied or said at all. I clarified that my response was about how I have used Postman, but the misunderstanding persisted. In the last two minutes of the interview, she allowed me to ask questions. When I asked a question, she posed it back to me instead of answering. Throughout the interview, there were several instances of misunderstandings and a seemingly ever-present negative perspective on my answers. About an hour later, I had my third and final interview with the QA Lead. She was pleasant, and I am confident I answered all of her questions correctly. However, she did not ask me any questions about Cypress, stating that she had received feedback from the prior interviewer on my Cypress technical assessment, so there was no need to ask more. This struck me as strange because she relied entirely on the feedback from the previous interviewer, without verifying my knowledge herself. She also mentioned during the interview that she is "very close" to the other interviewer. This made me believe that if the prior interviewer did not like me, she may have influenced the QA Lead's perspective, resulting in an unfair interview. I have my own thoughts as to why I seemingly did not get this job, and I believe it has nothing to do with my technical skills or soft skills. After my interviews I reached out to the recruiter to ask for a timeline on a decision and any feedback. Instead I was ghosted, after 5 interviews.. I believe that the made-up negative feedback from the second engineering interview played a role. As I said, it is clear she did not like me or want me to get the job and I have my beliefs on why. Some feedback for Reveleer: Be mindful of which team members are allowed to do interviews. Understand that some people have their own agenda's, and does not represent the company well.
