      Product Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Reddit (San Francisco, CA) in Sept 2019

      Interview

Reddit's process was interesting and very different than others. I sent in my application on their website and got a reply fairly quickly (within a few days) to have a 30 minute coffee chat with their VP of design. This was interesting since usually you chat with a recruiter at this point. Had a call with the VP of design, he asked me about my past works, talked about his team and I was able to ask quite a lot of questions. I got feedback I moved onto the next step: whiteboarding onsite ~45 minutes. Reddit mentioned this was the hardest part of the process. It's fairly similar to other whiteboarding sessions (Facebook, Google etc) where they present you with a broad problem (public transportation) and you had to try and design around it. It's important to think about business and user goals. Other people on here said it was very aggressive, I didn't think it was aggressive per se but it wasn't as collaborative as facebook or google. They gave you a problem and sat and watched you work through it. Gave feedback. Changed the problem. This was with VP of design and a Senior UX design manager. I 100% DID NOT come up with any solution it was just brain vomit of thoughts/ideas so I think it's just see how you think, interact, or react to their comments/feedback. I got notified I was moving onsite within a day. Their onsite seemed fairly similar to most design interviews: Past work presentation (all available designers are invited to go and watch), 2x peer reviews with someone on your team (30 minutes), 1 cross functional interview (30 minutes), and 1 hour with VP of design. I ended up not going to the onsite since I got an insanely good offer somewhere else and I didn't think Reddit could match.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I interviewed at Reddit (San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

1st phone screen was directly with the head of design. Mostly a casual chat and some lecture about design at Reddit. 2nd interview was a whiteboarding exercise. I think I was denied because my final solution did not agree with the economic and political views of the company. I suggested that public goods should be free.

The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Reddit

      Interview

Recruiter communication is below par at best. Lack of engagement and interest to candidates within the pipeline. I had to reach out a number of times to touch base. The scheduling was also miscommunicated and had a few surprise sessions that weren’t on the official interview schedule. The interviews themselves were quite engaging. It was with a series of cross-functional partners probing into different collaboration and leadership capabilities. I was asked to do an additional interview, but I’ve still yet to hear back from the main recruiter or hiring manager about any decision made.

      Question 1

Provide an example of a time where you’ve taken the lead or ownership of a project that included multiple cross-functional partners
