My interview experience with Opengear was underwhelming and disappointing.
After receiving an initial outreach from the recruiter asking for my availability, I replied promptly but didn’t hear back for several days. I eventually sent a follow-up with additional availability, only to receive the exact same email again in a new thread. It felt like they had forgotten they’d already contacted me.
When I finally met with the recruiter, she was pleasant but seemed unprepared. She lacked details about the specific job requirements, arrived a couple of minutes late, and couldn’t explain why the job listing referenced a location unrelated to the role. The one positive was that she brought up compensation proactively, which I appreciated since that’s not always an easy topic for recruiters to initiate. She mentioned that the VP of Marketing would likely want to interview me next and scheduled a follow-up.
Unfortunately, the second interview with the VP of Marketing was also disappointing. She joined late, appeared distracted and disengaged, and didn’t seem to have reviewed my portfolio or resume beforehand. The interview felt rushed and misaligned with what the recruiter had described about the role’s goals and desired skills.
Afterward, I followed up three separate times before receiving any response. The recruiter eventually replied, again in a new email thread, with my name spelled incorrectly, just minutes after my final follow-up. It gave the impression that they only responded because I persisted. I never received any feedback or explanation for why I wasn’t moving forward in the process.
Overall, the experience came across as disorganized and impersonal. Based on the lack of communication, preparation, and professionalism, I wouldn’t apply to Opengear again. In hindsight, it feels like I dodged a bullet.
