      Program Manager Interview

      9 Sept 2013
      Anonymous employee
      Redmond, WA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Microsoft (Redmond, WA) in May 2013

      Interview

I had a phone interview with the hiring manager, we talked about basic project management role and we discussed what's the difference between program manager and project manager. I got invited to an on-site with 5 interviewers. I first met with the Group Program Manager, and we started with a design question on electric car, and the problem to solve was how to we can get an electric car charge quickly so we can drive across the country without waiting. Then I had two interviews with two PM leads, one of them focused on my pitching skill. For this one, I was asked to pitch as if I were talking to Ballmer. It didn't go well since I haven't thought of getting question like this before. Next I was asked to make a quick sales pitch for my product (a 2 mins pitch at, say a product fair). This was much better, and he had follow up questions (pretending to be a real audience). The other lead asked a scenario question which I was totally expecting it. He described the scenario, and I work on getting the information from him. Get all info before making a suggestion to the problem. The next interviewer focused on pure design question, I think the question was about designing a vending machine, but I couldn't remember the details. Certainly things to remember is to find out what problem we are trying to solve or what value we are trying to provide with the product/feature we are designing. The last interviewer was the Director of PM, not so technical. Mostly focus on why a PM role fits me. Also asked me which interview was good, and which was bad, and of course, why. He did a short follow up on one of the question, but I couldn't recall what he asked.

      Program Manager Interview

      17 Mar 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Hyderābād
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Microsoft (Hyderābād) in Jan 2026

      Interview

Not a great experience with interviews taking 1 month to complete. Despite ongoing communication, the role did not move forward, reportedly due to approval constraints. The overall experience highlights a gap in aligning internal approvals before progressing candidates to advanced stages. Clearer communication and better alignment internally would improve the candidate experience

      Accepted offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I interviewed at Microsoft (Redmond, WA)

      Interview

The interview process is grueling and I get why people do it but its more awareness, know that you'll spend an entire day and meet several people, so it's important to be mentally and physically prepared. Eat a good breakfast but not heavy stay hydrated. This was just for a PM role it's their standard process I imagine executive level is another thing altogether

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Tell me about a time you didn't agree with someone who was a stakeholder on your project and how did you handle that?
      Answer question

      Question 2

Tell me about a time that your project was not going to launch on it's timeline.

      Interview

Very smooth, thoughtful interview process. It showed the recruiter really cared what I had to contribute and asked great followup clarifying questions. Would definitely recommend everyone try an interview with them even if it doesn't pan out.
