      Senior Android Developer Interview

      30 Apr 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at MasterClass (San Francisco, CA) in Mar 2020

      Interview

This was one of the most amazing interview processes I experienced in Silicon Valley. The whole team cares about people and try to see the value in you! A recruiter from Masterclass reached out to me for the open position and it was good timing for me. We scheduled a technical phone screen. Unlike many other big companies do, first, they asked me to introduce myself and the interviewer did the same and they allowed me to ask any questions I might have at the end of the interview. The technical question was straight forward using a collaboration tool, I worked on a couple of coding questions that I would consider acceptable for an initial phone interview. The result was positive and I got invited to the onsite. When we scheduled my onsite, I got an awesome gift, yes you are reading this right, I got one year free access to Masterclass. I think this is a very thoughtful gift by the recruitment team and not to mention I never got a gift (or heard) from any companies as candidate for a position. Due to Covid-19, the onsite interview held online. Since this is an Android specific role, my first 2 interviews were related to Android programming. This may somewhat surprise to many others because many other companies still keep the focus on programming fundamentals rather than what the candidate will be doing on a daily base. Thanks, Masterclass being smart about the hiring process. The next session was focusing on system design. This one was about designing an application that you probably already have on your phone. I thought this was a brilliant choice because you don't need to spend extra time explaining the product requirements, instead, you have time to focus on technical design challenges to figure out the candidate's knowledge in the design as well as with the data structures. At that point, I already knew I am talking to an awesome team that works smartly rather than just hard. Next, I've talked to product, this was also time for me to learn the vision and the core values of the product and we went through how I have been working with product and answered questions related to building a successful product and the tools/processes that I've been using/following. Lastly, I talked to the director of mobile engineering which was focusing on my leadership skills. The set of questions was well thought. It gave me the opportunity to talk about the great things I've done as a manager and also included the areas I got challenged as a lead and lessons I learned through my experiences. After the onsite, I got more information about the engineering culture and the takeaways, I got honored to receive feedback from the team about my interview. This process was an absolute pleasure and this is how an interview process should be.
