I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Illumina (San Diego, CA) in Feb 2017
Interview
Applied in October. First round recorded video in late November, second round phone conversation with the hiring manager in December, and was invited to San Diego for assessment event January. Illumina flew ~80 interns out to San Diego, including myself. Final round at company headquarters included 2 group exercises, technical interview (very relaxed), impromptu presentation, and networking social hour.
Virtual interview, I didn't get to talk to a real person, had to record all of my answers with a time limit, it was a horrible process and there was very little human communication
The first step was an audio-only hirevue that allowed two attempts. After passing that, there were two video call interviews with team members for a total of around 90 minutes give or take.

Interview
Weird video interview where they asked me "How would you explain to a 6-year-old why the sky is orange at sunset." The other question I don't remember but was equally strange for a 2-question video interview. It felt very impersonal.
