At a less recent time near post graduation from my University (with a M.S.E.E, but less experience) , I had the opportunity to apply at iDrive online, and was contacted by the Human Resources manager who sent me an email to reply back with salary requirements and to schedule an in person interview, There was no phone screen conducted to the live interview. There were some inadvertent mix ups in who the email was addressed to so I replied with the requested responses in a tactful and proper manner. The interview was a non phone screen in person analytical programming interview conducted in a non interactive technical and analytical manner to assess independent problem solving ability. It was conducted in a manner that created a scenario that presented the candidate, myself, the opportunity to answer puzzle questions on a written paper covering a variety of questions, that they particularly like to ask of fresh graduates, and in a manner that might be might be perceived though not actually later on, a little difficult to start. One such problem was the bridge solving problem, which I fortunately is one problem I have encountered and solved successfully in a verbal manner and had experience in solving, followed by analytical puzzles that required a written response on paper. Due to my interest in PHP and JavaScript I applied to the position. Following the 1 hour allotted time for the written portion, the second part of the interview consisted of the VP of technology, Vilabh Mishra, who handed me a paper of two questions (JavaScript, and PHP). The JavaScript and PHP question was to be answered on a desk computer which I presume was his desk computer in his office and the door was closed somewhat impersonal manner, and I was given ample time to solve. Of course, these interview strategies are in place to assess independent analytical problem solving ability, program construction, proceeding a verbal explanation of created solution. After he walked back in to see if I solved, and he evaluated my solution through my verbal explanation, which based on his non-verbal facial cues signaled to me that the approach and method of communicating the solution was not yet at the level expected at iDrive, he requested the paper back and I left his office and was guided back to the lobby and concluded the interview. Prior to the conclusion, I did record the question and the answer I reached to be able to reference my answer when asking online for help.
