It pains me to write this. I was very excited when Gong contacted me for a phone screen and even more excited when I made it to the hiring manager round. Unfortunately that excitement was squashed within minutes of hopping on the Zoom call. I can admit that I did not give my best interview ever from my living room, but it seemed like the hiring manager had made his mind up about me before the interview began. He never provided me with an overview of the role, never used my resume to ask meaningful questions about my experiences and how they would relate back to the role, and the questions he did ask were very generic (e.g. "What's your superpower?") I have never participated in an interview where the hiring manager asked me nothing about my previous experience and didn't review the specifics of the role at hand. The absence of targeted questions based on my resume (as well as relevant general questions) made me feel as though I had wasted my time on a company that never took my candidacy seriously. I know I'm talented and capable, but when an interview feels like a useless formality, it's pretty hard to draw the kind of connections needed to make a positive impression on an interviewer.
