I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at GitHub (New York, NY) in Oct 2018
Interview
It was long and time consuming process with the HR person quite slow in keeping me updated.
I was given questions I needed to answer - took several hours of my time. After that it was a long waiting game. I would contact the HR rep one or more times before I would get an update. I felt that they didn't value my time and were not really taking my interview process seriously. One time I received a message that indicated they meant a different candidate.
Given one of their company values is Empathy, how they treat interview candidates is pretty poor.
Remote interviewers need to think of the candidate as sitting in a conference room waiting. Be responsive and keep them informed!
Other than the poorly managed interview process, the interview stages were quite interesting.
Once I spoke to interviewers I was quite impressed.
