      Backend Developer Interview

      Interview

I applied online and was invited to interview remotely. The process involved two rounds: the first was a quick Python coding exercise with one of the engineering team members, and the second was with the team lead and another member, covering writing function and test. Both interviews followed the same pattern, a brief introduction to the team and what they do, then straight into the coding test. At no point did anyone take the time to learn about me, my background, or my experience. The team lead came across as impatient, which made for an uncomfortable interview experience.

      Interview

The process consisted of three interviews: an initial short coding interview, a more in-depth technical interview involving additional Python coding questions and a LeetCode-style problem, and a final behavioural interview focused on my experience and soft skills. Everyone I spoke to was very friendly and made a genuine effort to put me at ease. The interviews felt more like collaborative conversations than formal tests, creating a positive atmosphere. The interviewers also seemed genuinely interested in my background and experience, and we had some engaging technical discussions. Communication was clear throughout the process - both the hiring and recruitment teams outlined the structure of each stage in advance, and kept me updated at every step. They were always responsive and happy to answer any questions I had.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Fletchers Solicitors (London, England) in Feb 2026

      Interview

In the first stage, there was an online coding challenge. They asked me to share my screen and use an IDE without autocomplete or AI features. The interviewer asked questions and asked me to code and explain my answers live. I answered all the coding questions except one, which I ran out of time for. Then they ghosted me, and even after I followed up, I received no response from the company. The worst part of the interview was that they did not even let me introduce myself or talk about my abilities and experience, and instead jumped straight into coding. Overall, my experience with this interview was not pleasant.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Write a function that calculates the sum of squared numbers in Python. Then the interviewer asked if I could write it more efficiently.
