Interview
The reputation about the bad culture at Duke is true. I was excited to interview at Duke Raleigh. I was currently employed at a different hospital but was ready for change. When I arrived at Duke Raleigh, I was greeted in the lobby by two employees who escorted me to a meeting room. I knew one of these employees as she was a recent former co-worker from my current job. As we walked to the meeting room she was beside me and I noticed she was busy texting someone. Just by looking at her it was impossible to not see who she was texting, and it was my current manager. The interview panel included these two employees and two managers. My former co-worker continued texting throughout the entire interview, and even giggled multiple times. I felt like leaving because I believed I was the topic of conversation and I felt my privacy was seriously being violated. I maintained professionalism and stayed, answering all of the questions asked of me. During the interview I also observed a manager on the panel falling asleep multiple times. My effort and interaction during this interview was professional and sincere at all times, even though I knew the only reason I was invited to this interview was for this panel's entertainment as they likely had no intention of being fair or sincere with me. Afterward, at my current job, it was obvious my manager knew I had interviewed with Duke. This experience confirmed for me the reputation Duke has for a toxic culture. They made a joke out of my interview and violated my right to maintain privacy during my job search. I'm thankful I dodged a bullet by not working for this organization.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at Duke Health (Lake Norman of Catawba, NC) in Mar 2026
Interview
I was really excited about the opportunity to interview with Duke Health. This was probably one of the easiest interviews I’ve ever had, but it was a little atypical. The hiring manager talked about the hospital, recent changes, the department, possible future changes, and some aspects of the open position. I think he asked me two questions. One about my certification and one about my availability.
I hung up from the interview confused. He didn’t seem to know the specifics about the position he was interviewing for. He said he “should” know more the following week. I got the feeling like this perhaps wasn’t a definitive opening. Still, I stated that I was very interested in the position and would like to come and tour the department once a clearer idea of the position was found.
Things seemed to end on a positive note. I had hopes of hearing from him the following week, but no such contact was made. Nearly three weeks after the interview, I received the rejection email. I reached out and kindly requested any feedback or constructive criticism that may help me in the future, but neither the recruiter nor the hiring manager bothered to respond at all.
