      Software Engineer Interview

      17 Nov 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Dosh (Austin, TX) in Nov 2018

      Interview

Short phone screen with recruiter, then an hour or so technical phone screen. Once through the screening process, a 5 hour onsite was scheduled. Three technical interviews and two more behavioral/professional experience interviews. The technical interviews were probably not absurdly difficult for someone strong in algorithms, but I found them challenging. The company definitely places far more value on algorithmic ability over practical experience with the relevant tech stack. Was notified within a day of my rejection, with feedback from the recruiter on the reasoning. Most people I met with had been at the company for just 3-6 months. In fact, I think only one interviewer had worked at Dosh for more than a year.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Given a list of denominations (e.g. [ 5¢, 8¢, 10¢ ]) and an amount of money (e.g. 15¢), find the minimum number of stamps the person can purchase while using at much of the money as possible.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience interviewing at Dosh. As a newer startup (founded in 2016), we have reached a high-growth stage and took our company from less than 30 to over 100 employees in 2018 alone. Due to that, most of the employees we have are newer to the company, but we have confidence in their skills to grow our talent base and build a world-class team.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Dosh (Austin, TX) in Aug 2018

      Interview

Had a couple of phone interviews to start off. They were great, both had a wonderful time balance between coding questions and questions you can ask the interviewer to learn more about the company/infrastructure stack. The onsite interviews were for the most part radically different. They were technical challenges with very little testing of personality and fitting for the particular role and left 3-5 minutes for your own questions. Not really any different from what you'd expected from Big N company like Amazon or Google, which might not be something you are expecting from a start up like Dosh. Beyond that though, there was really only one interview that did not sit well with me. Reviewer was intense the whole interview, made me anxious the whole hour I was scheduled. The reviewer asked what I would consider a derivative to a common dynamic programming problem, but I had trouble understanding at first what they were looking for since they never wrote down the question or an example of input/output until later in the interview, so it took longer than what I considered necessary to finish. My first attempt was an iterative solution that was using a bottom-up approach that was missing an element when I tried to run through the program which was not surprising since I was sweating bullets at this point in the interview. I decided to switch to the recursive top-down approach in the end since it was a little easier for me to whiteboard and might get me out of the speed bump I was having with my first approach. Told the interviewer my thoughts and that it was a bit more efficient with our time left and the interviewer replied with "no, its not more efficient its the only solution", which is straight up wrong, but I wasn't going to pick a fight with my interviewer. It left me wondering if they just googled for a question they found interesting but never really checked all the possible solutions before the interview. All in all, Dosh is still somewhat new to hiring full-time engineers so I'd give them a break in this department. I hope they can work out the kinks for their next interviews.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. You are correct that our process for hiring engineers does require time in-person, but we are always looking at both the technical capabilities as well as the culture fit aspect. We do strive to be on par with the large engineering companies you mentioned as we are working to build a world-class team and provide the best possible technology to our consumers and merchants, regardless of being a startup. We understand interviewing is not a science and are always working on getting out the kinks as we scale and look for the best technical talent possible. If you have additional feedback you would like to share on how we can further improve the process, please reach out to our recruiting team (careers@dosh.cash) directly.
