      General Manager Interview

      26 Oct 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Singapore
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Deliveroo (Singapore) in Aug 2018

      Interview

Got the interview through internal referral. But the job description was rather vague and focused on the requirement of management consulting experience. Got a call from the company recruiter a few days later and had a very brief interview. The recruiter was ill-prepared and was in a really noisy environment and kept using this broken bluetooth headset. His voice kept coming in and out and I could not understand the majority of his questions and comments. He didn't make eye contact with me during the video call and did not even read my resume. He basically scanned through my LinkedIn profile. Toward the end he said that they're looking for someone with sales experience, which was not mentioned in the initial job description. Also, I had looked up the General Managers in other countries and none of them have had sales experience. Only some of them came out of management consulting. But a majority of them graduated from Wharton, the CEO's alma mater. The recruiter was very unprofessional and unprepared. If anything, the hiring experience was an indication of poor team and management structure, which reflected in their constant negative press.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Deliveroo

      Interview

Overall the process was ok but really badly organised. I was contacted by an external recruiter who was great and very thorough, but as soon as I actually met the company representative it went downhill from there. He was late for our initial interview and distracted throughout by the presence of deliveroo drivers in the restaurant we met in. He clearly wasn't really paying attention to what I was saying, getting up half way through the interview to talk to the restaurant manager without apology. By the time he returned, we'd pretty much ran out of time. I had quite a few doubts by this point and the interview concluded without me being be able to ask many questions about the role, the company or its culture. This was followed up with a 2 hour excel/operational test which I completed in my spare time. After which, I was invited to go to London to meet with senior management. Being a manager myself, I made it clear I could not take absence without prior notice as I would need to arrange cover and a date was set for the near future - booking transport and taking a day of holiday accordingly so that I could work around their schedule. Despite this, the booking was then attempted to be changed around 3/4 times at the last minute by Deliveroo, which I tried to be flexible as possible with. Finally, I decided to withdraw my application due to sheer frustration with the experience to date. If a company is this disorganised, inconsiderate and bullish with future prospects, it raises questions over how it treats its current employees and decided it probably wasn't right for me.

      Question 1

Do you think your employees need to be afraid of you as a manager? How would you select future Deliveroo cities and locations?
