      Senior Product Designer Interview

      9 Mar 2022

      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Datadog

      Interview

I went in knowing that their UX interview process was still in an experimental phase, as they are currently going through growing pains in the company and their design team. I also learned from the employees that the CEO might get in the way of design at this company. The interview consist of a panel of hiring managers, lead designers, and a wall of interview trainees. Though some of the interviewers were pleasant, none of the interviewers have any visibility of who the hiring manager is or what you will be working on. They are only there to test you, break you, and bring out their own biases. The interview process could have easily been shorten to 3 session. It's 5 hours long total. There were 5 sessions total. 4 of them are repetitive. There are for 2 portfolio reviews, 1 app critique, 1 UX whiteboard session, 1 product & execution. Because of their unusual large interviewing panel that includes the "shadows", expect them to take a long time to deliberate your application. Even if you passed all the interviews, they will still find a dumb reason that's not related to UX skills to reject you. They need to be more honest with what they're looking for in a candidate. If you decide to interview with them, I advise you to tell them you want the sessions to be reduced because it's a waste of time when you're doing the same thing more than once. The only good thing out of this interview is that the recruiters are available for questions and will provide you with feedback.

      Application

I interviewed at Datadog (Newyork, Argyll and Bute, Scotland)

      Interview

It was a Zoom interview, but they said it was okay to keep the camera off. It lasted a bit under 20–30 minutes. The interviewer was friendly and created a good atmosphere, explaining everything clearly. They also mentioned that relocation support would be provided. I think I answered well and the overall conversation went smoothly, but I didn’t receive an offer afterward.

      Application

      Interview

I got a lot of good feedback from the team but ultimately did not get the role. The recruiting team here for design is very thorough, but one hiccup I experienced was the phases involved with the interview were not outlined to me accurately, or maybe I misunderstood the steps. The team there is very sharp and they will ask detailed questions about your process. Make sure your case study, and app for critique are polished.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Datadog in Aug 2024

      Interview
