      Data Engineer Interview

      20 Apr 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Canonical in Sept 2022

      Interview

Long essays and meaningless processes. Couldnt get any response or commitment to speak to hiring manager even though he mailed me to say I must let him know if I have questions. So after round 3 of interview process and attempting to get my questions answered I decided it wasnt worth my time. Very Difficult because i couldnt get any conversation or interaction. Why would I work in a team that cannot communicate?

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1) Lots of questions about your education and experience. Almost a philosophical deep dive into who you are professionally. It works out to almost 5 pages of answers which Im sure the hiring squad doesnt even read. 2) Silly “aptitude” and speed test. 3) Data Science take home test. . . . 100) maybe get a response or an offer? Doubt it. Good luck trying

I will start by explaining that we are continually making improvements to our hiring process. Since your interview we have launched our personalised web based candidate page to provide a candidate with useful information as they move through our process i.e. interview plans, FAQs, hiring video etc. We are sorry to read that your questions went unanswered during the hiring process and we will certainly make sure this is raised in our weekly hiring call. As a remote first organisation we absolutely recognise that communication is critical to our operational success, learning and development and the happiness of our people. We can offer absolute assurance that all written submissions are reviewed by our people. It is an important part of our process and one that helps us decide on the suitability of a candidate. The assessments that we use at Canonical have been selected carefully and seek to understand much more than simply a technical skill. We do look at early years as well as other indicators from a variety of assessments, which brings really valuable insights to our decision making. Our inhouse Talent Science team brings professional viewpoints on assessing skills and ensures that the methods we use are both credible and professional.

      Interview

There is a long written interview, which took 3-4 pages to answer, and followed up with a matrigma test. The matrigma test is pretty basic, it consists of 4/5 different tests, they are verbal, logical, etc. I got 3 tests resulting in higher than the average, and the last 2 test results were just average.

      Interview

They wanted to know if my high school math grades were in the top 5% of my cohort. I went to high school 25 years ago and I don't have the transcripts anymore. I can't remember my own grades, let alone those of others in my class (?!), so how am I supposed to calculate my placing relative to my cohort? Found the focus on high school disrespectful and dismissive of the previous 25 years of my life.
