      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Activision

      Interview

I found the job through a Google Groups posting and emailed the team lead directly. I had a phone interview with the HR person and then the team lead. The HR person was very friendly and enthusiastic. He was apologetic about having to grill me for gamer cred but I understand that it's an important part of the role, I explained that I'd been playing video games as long as I can remember and we discussed the various games I play and reminisced about old Sim CDrom games. My interview with the team leader went less well. When asked about "how diversity is valued" on their team, he sighed heavily, paused for a while, and then managed to remember that "one, no, two of the assistants are female" and "we used to have a transgender" but they left. Suffice to say, that's not a great answer. After 3-4 weeks of radio silence ( I was told it would take a while to hear back), I was told that while my technical skills and experience are impressive (I have every skill and requirement listed on the job description, including extensive game play in FPSs), I don't have sufficient "game knowledge" to be able to "advocate for the game." Given that the main game in question is one that I don't play extensively because of it's issues with misogyny in both content and fanbase, it seems like some inseparable bias to only hire people who are fans of that specific game already when almost all of those people are men.
