Pros
There is a reason why the pay is so high and why the benefits are so good. There are a lot of really good, passionate people that work here.
Cons
A lot, In the ionm dept in neurodiagnostics is a kin to a slow motion train wreck. Your encouraged to do things the way you want them to be done. Only to be surprised at your 90 days review with issues you had your first week. Within my first month I was accused of double billing, because there was an internal glitch with our billing program. I was accused of a HIPPA violation for asking a coworker how his weekend was. I was accused of not doing my job, even though I was doing it. This is a blame the IOM tech first, then learn later you were right. The more experienced people will publicly embarrass you in the OR, remotely mess with your computer, come into the OR and play 20 questions. They will also condescend you in a case. Telling a surgeon everything is fine when its not. They will tout “the Vandy Way”
Which is Vanderbilt speak for you do it my way, or no way. Its rule for me, not for thee. Also rarely do you get breaks. I have gone anywhere from 6-12 hours without a break, food, water or a bathroom break. They never have enough working equipment so workers had to remove amps off others carts to cover their cases. One person will tell you do monitor your case this way, another will tell you their way and you have to decipher what they want. There is one individual who works there that is extremely arrogant and obnoxious. They come off as all knowing. Some people are allowed to get away with murder while others get absolutely trashed during their cases. This is a very stressful job and the money isn’t worth it. The fact that workers are allowed to remotely mess up other workers templates during cases is dangerous and it puts patients at risk. The stress will effect your health and its awful. Lastly your supposed to work very fast, meanwhile it takes the students up to two hours to establish a catheter and an A line. But you have to speed through your setup. Your constantly working with new people and students and it can get very frustrating.
