What is the hiring process like at DBS Bank?

      DBS Bank reviews

I thought money is always in banking firms, but not really.

      Senior java developer
      Former contractor
      Singapore
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

The facilities and workplace are nice. They renovate occasionally, so you will feel lively and motivated to go to the office. The pay is also somehow good (but not as expected), but maybe because I'm under two layers of agency, and the hiring manager didn't give a nice figure to the agency. The work culture is also good, there was camaraderie in the team. I was surrounded by smart people. They try to embrace new technology.

      Cons

Job security is not guaranteed, especially for contractors. They cut the budget just like playing a game where you need to sell something to buy something else. Not looking into the value and talent of people. Maybe this is how corporate work really is, but being the (so-called) number one bank in Singapore, I am expecting more and a bit more humane decision-making.

      Pros

Internal mobility coupled with training fosters continuous skill development and a more adaptable workforce, leading to enhanced employee engagement and retention. This also reduces hiring costs and speeds up onboarding, as internal talent is already familiar with DBS's culture and processes

      Cons

The challenge is not easy. But once you spend some time in the new role, you come out as new you

Concerns regarding diversity in leadership and internal promotion paths

      Finance analyst

      Business outlook

      Pros

The workplace is home to some kind and talented individuals.

      Cons

There appears to be a significant lack of diversity within the Group Finance leadership team, which has created a noticeable glass ceiling for local talent. Hiring and promotion patterns seem heavily skewed toward external hires for senior roles (AVP level and above), while long-tenured local staff remain in associate-level positions with limited upward mobility. Furthermore, the culture feels increasingly centered around a specific leadership circle, leading to a "marked" environment where dissenting opinions are discouraged. This has resulted in a decline in morale among those who feel their contributions are overlooked in favor of a specific hiring profile.

      Business outlook

      Pros

2 hours lunch break, lots of money for team bonding, convenient location

      Cons

The experience here heavily depends on your team and manager. You might find yourself working under a traditional micromanager, which can be challenging. The corporate environment is marred by office politics and gossip, making it difficult to form genuine connections, despite claims of a “close-knit” culture. The onboarding process is lacking—there are minimal resources and guidance, leaving new hires to figure things out on their own. This can be frustrating, especially if you’re eager to hit the ground running. Feedback is often unsolicited and excessive, fostering a toxic atmosphere. There’s a noticeable double standard between the expectations for new hires and long-term employees, which feels hypocritical. Flexibility is another weak point. Working hours and locations are rigid, and any requests for adjustments require lengthy explanations and approval processes, even if you’re performing well. The lack of trust is evident, though it's masked by an emphasis on maintaining a “professional image.” Every detail, even those unrelated to work, seems subject to scrutiny, which adds unnecessary pressure. This workplace might suit those who are comfortable following instructions without questioning authority, but it’s not ideal for individuals who thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments.

      Pros

Decent salary nothing else at all

      Cons

Severe toxic bullying culture. Working in there is like a war zone, each to its own and leaders spend more time politicking. Poor leaders actively particjpates in the bullying of new staff especially contractors whom they deemed as not protected by HR policy and therefore easy targets. A senior leader who had multiple HR bullying cases can still be up for promotion. This gives you insight on how much DBS actually cares about their employees' well being.
